Romelu Lukaku Transfers to Fenerbahce: A New Chapter in Istanbul
Romelu Lukaku’s turbulent Neapolitan chapter is over. His next stop: Istanbul.
Napoli have agreed to sell the veteran striker to Fenerbahce for a reported €6 million fee plus performance-related add-ons, a modest figure that underlines how decisively the Italian champions have reshaped their attack. The deal only became possible once Napoli had their future up front secured, completing the permanent signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United earlier in the summer for €44m (£38m).
That move signalled a clear change of era. Out goes the high-earning, battle-worn centre-forward. In comes a 21-year-old built for the next decade. For all Lukaku’s name recognition and history at the very top of European football, Napoli chose flexibility and youth over nostalgia and reputation.
The relationship had been fraying for some time. Lukaku’s fitness problems never truly went away, limiting his impact and testing patience inside the club. Tension spiked last spring when he undertook an unapproved training spell in Belgium, a decision that drew sharp warnings from sporting director Giovanni Manna and accelerated the sense that both sides were ready to walk away. Once a serious offer arrived from Turkey, the exit door swung open.
Fenerbahce, though, see opportunity where Napoli saw risk.
Fenerbahce’s big swing
The Istanbul giants are in the middle of an aggressive rebuild, determined to claw back domestic dominance. Lukaku becomes the latest marquee name in a squad being rapidly upgraded, another heavy-hitting arrival to stoke expectation on the Bosphorus.
He joins a dressing room already reshaped by headline signings: defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City, Mason Greenwood from Marseille, and Vedat Muriqi, fresh from a 23-goal La Liga campaign with Real Mallorca. It is a spine built to win now, and Lukaku is expected to stand at the centre of it.
For the Belgian, Turkey offers something he has badly needed: a clean slate. Last season with Napoli never really got going. Lingering injury issues restricted him to just seven club appearances, a meagre return for a forward of his pedigree. Yet his international form told a different story. With Belgium at this summer’s World Cup, he featured in all six matches and scored three goals as the Red Devils reached the quarter-finals, proving he can still carry a frontline when his body cooperates.
Life after Conte
This move also comes in the wake of Antonio Conte’s departure from Naples, a separation that cuts deeper for Lukaku than for most. No manager has consistently extracted more from him than Conte, across three different clubs and two countries.
Their reunion at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona looked like one last great act together. It delivered, at least in the standings. Napoli secured the 2024-25 Serie A title, with Lukaku contributing 14 league goals to the charge. Then, almost as quickly as they had come together again, both moved on.
Their bond had been forged years earlier at Inter. Under Conte at San Siro, Lukaku hit the most explosive form of his career, rattling in 34 goals in one season and 30 in the next. Those numbers powered Inter to a Europa League final and the 2020-21 Serie A crown, and propelled Lukaku into his blockbuster £97.5m return to Chelsea. That spell remains the benchmark against which every later version of Lukaku is measured.
Another chapter in a restless career
Fenerbahce is the latest stop on a journey that has rarely stood still. After that second Chelsea stint fizzled out inside a year, Lukaku embarked on a sequence of loans: back to Inter, where he helped reach the 2022-23 Champions League final, then on to Roma. Those moves set up his permanent switch to Napoli in 2024, a transfer that was supposed to bring stability but instead added another short chapter to a sprawling CV.
Now comes a new league, a new pressure cooker, a new set of expectations. Fenerbahce want a title. Lukaku wants to prove he is still a decisive striker at the sharp end of European football.
One of them is about to discover just how much the other has left.
