Santiago Bueno Joins Club America on Loan

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves spell has been put on pause – and revived 5,000 miles away in Mexico City.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back has joined Club America on loan until the end of the season, with the Mexican giants securing an option to buy the Uruguay international.

Bueno, 27, arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year deal and quickly became a regular presence in the side. Across three seasons he clocked up 70 Premier League appearances, anchoring the defence through some turbulent campaigns.

He enjoyed his standout moment in gold last September, heading in his first Wolves goal in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham. He went on to feature 29 times in the league last term, a gruelling season that ended with Wolves’ relegation and the end of their eight-year stay in the top flight.

This season, though, he found himself on the outside. Bueno did not make an appearance at the start of the new campaign and was left out when Wolves finalised their 25-man squad.

That decision opened the door for a late move.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” technical director Matt Jackson told the club’s website. “We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline, and when we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out.”

Club America, currently sitting top of the Liga MX table, have moved decisively to take advantage. For Bueno, it is a sharp change of scenery: from a relegated side in England’s second tier to a title-chasing powerhouse in Mexico.

For Wolves, it is a calculated reset. For Club America, it could be a bargain if the option to buy is triggered at the end of the season.
