Santos Triumphs Over Macará in Copa Sudamericana
Santos walked through fire at Vila Belmiro and came out with a lead – just. Two injuries, a nightmare start, and a night-long duel with VAR did not stop Peixe from turning it around to beat Macará 2-1 in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 on Thursday.
Gabigol and Willian Arão scored the goals. Neymar ran the show. And Santos, under pressure on all fronts, somehow found a way.
Chaos from the kickoff
The script fell apart almost immediately.
Five minutes in, Luan Peres backed off, Willian Arão didn’t clear his lines, and Franco Posse pounced to put Macará in front. One lapse, one punishment. Vila stunned.
From there, Santos had to rebuild themselves on the pitch. The technical gap was clear, but they needed to settle before it could matter.
Gabigol began to drag the team forward, finding pockets, forcing chances, demanding the ball. The response was coming, but Cuca’s problems were only growing.
Gabriel Menino went down and had to be replaced. Then Bontempo followed him off before the break. Two forced changes, two early blows in a knockout tie.
So Santos turned to their stars.
Neymar, wearing the No. 10, slipped a pass into the path of the No. 9. One touch, one finish. Gabigol scored his 100th goal for Santos, a landmark strike that dragged Peixe level and ignited Vila.
It wasn’t all joy for Neymar. He had already switched boots, then sent a jolt of concern through the stadium when he slipped and felt pain around his left knee. He carried on, but every step drew a collective breath.
VAR steals the spotlight
Santos came out after halftime like a team determined to kill the tie early.
Gabigol found the net twice more. Twice he wheeled away, twice Vila roared. Twice the flag – and then VAR – cut the celebrations short.
On the first, Neymar let the ball run with a clever dummy before Gabigol finished, only for the offside call to stand. On the second, Neymar threaded a perfect pass, Gabigol buried it, and again technology intervened. Offside. No goal.
The pressure was relentless, but the scoreboard refused to move.
Arão steps up at last
Santos didn’t back off. They pushed Macará deeper, wrestled with their own nerves, and kept searching for a way through a stubborn, committed side.
The breakthrough came from a different source.
Neymar went to the corner flag and delivered something Macará simply weren’t ready for. His set-piece caught the defense napping, and Willian Arão arrived to turn the ball in. His first goal in a Santos shirt, and one that may carry real weight in the tie.
Peixe had the comeback. They had control. They just didn’t have the cushion their performance suggested. Despite dominating large stretches, Santos will travel for the second leg with only a one-goal advantage.
All to play for in Ecuador
The return match is set for next Thursday at Estadio Bellavista. Santos go into it knowing a draw is enough to see them through.
Macará’s path is clear but steep: they must win by at least two goals to qualify in regular time. A one-goal victory for the Ecuadorian side would push the tie to penalties.
Waiting on the other side of the bracket are Atlético or Red Bull Bragantino. Galo hold a 1-0 edge after the first leg in Bragança.
For Santos, there is no time to savor the comeback. The club that currently opens the relegation zone in the Brasileirão now heads to São Januário to face 18th-placed Vasco on Sunday. Another pressure game, another night where slipping is not an option.
