Saudi Arabia's Gulf 27 Squad Announcement Amid Injuries

The Greek head coach of Saudi Arabia will announce his final "Green Falcons" squad for the Arabian Gulf Cup – Gulf 27 – on Wednesday, according to Saudi channel Al-Ekhbariya, just a week before the tournament kicks off in Jeddah.

Gulf 27 opens on 23 September on Saudi soil and runs through to 6 October, a compact window that leaves little margin for error in selection. Donis knows it.

And he knows he will go into it without his biggest star.

Captain Salem Al-Dawsari has been ruled out of the tournament through injury, a major blow to Saudi Arabia’s attacking plans and to the dressing room leadership group. Right-back Saud Abdulhamid is also a serious doubt, adding another headache on the defensive flank.

So the squad list on Wednesday is not just a formality. It is a puzzle.

Saudi Arabia step into this home Gulf campaign chasing a trophy that has eluded them for 23 years. Their last Arabian Gulf Cup triumph came back in 2003, a gap that weighs heavily on a football nation used to demanding more of itself on the regional stage.

The draw has placed the hosts in Group One, a rugged section alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait. Only the top two will advance to the semi-finals, leaving no room for a slow start or experimental line-ups once the whistle goes.

The stage is set in Jeddah. The dates are fixed. The injuries are real.

On Wednesday, Donis must decide who carries Saudi Arabia’s hopes into a tournament they have been waiting more than two decades to reclaim.
