Scott McTominay to Undergo Heart Procedure After Diagnosis

Napoli have confirmed that Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay will undergo a minor heart procedure after the discovery of what the club describe as “a mild benign arrhythmia”.

The 29-year-old was taken off after 56 minutes of Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat to Como on Sunday, a change that at the time looked routine. Tests since have revealed the issue, prompting the decision for corrective treatment “in the coming days”.

Napoli expect McTominay to be back in action shortly after the international break in early October. The player struck a confident tone himself, posting on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won't take long.”

The timing, though, hits Scotland hard. McTominay is now likely to miss Sebastien Pocognoli's first four matches as national team head coach – a home-and-away double-header against Slovenia, followed by Nations League fixtures with North Macedonia and Switzerland.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia is when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. Napoli have stressed the issue is mild and benign, and expectations inside the club are that McTominay will return once the short recovery period is complete.
