Scott McTominay's Heart Surgery Declared a Success by Napoli

Scott McTominay’s heart surgery has been hailed as “a complete success” by Napoli, who expect the Scotland midfielder back in training before the end of the month.

The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure on Tuesday morning at Spire Manchester Hospital, a minimally invasive operation designed to correct irregular heart rhythms. The issue was picked up after he was taken off 56 minutes into Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August.

Tests revealed a mild benign arrhythmia. The club and player moved quickly. The treatment followed, and so did the update Napoli were desperate to give.

In a statement, the Italian side confirmed McTominay will rest for two weeks before returning to training, keeping alive their original hope that the former Manchester United midfielder will be available again shortly after the international break in early October.

McTominay, never far from the action or the conversation, sent his own message on Instagram when the heart issue was first made public: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

His recovery will be watched closely in Scotland as well as in Naples. New national team head coach Sebastien Pocognoli faces a demanding start at the end of September and into early October, with Nations League fixtures home and away against Slovenia, plus meetings with North Macedonia and Switzerland.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia is when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm. For McTominay, the diagnosis has come early, the procedure has gone to plan, and the timeline is clear.

Now the wait begins to see how quickly he can turn a successful operation into minutes back on the pitch for club and country.
