Scott McTominay Transfer Forecast: Premier League Return or Jose Mourinho Reunion?
Scott McTominay has yet to finalize a contract extension with Napoli, stirring speculation about his future. Former Scotland international Pat Nevin shared insights with GOAL on what might lie ahead for the midfielder, including a possible reunion with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid or a return to the Premier League.
From Manchester United to Naples: A £26 Million Move
In summer 2024, McTominay ended a long association with Manchester United, moving to Italy for £26 million ($35m). At Old Trafford, he often played as a holding midfielder but struggled to secure a consistent role. Many questioned why United parted with a dependable home-grown player amid their ongoing struggles. Critics also suggest they missed recognizing his potential as a box-to-box midfielder.
Success in Serie A: Title, MVP, and Ballon d'Or Recognition
McTominay has flourished at Napoli, given more freedom to advance in play. His first season brought Serie A glory and an MVP award. He climbed to 18th place in the 2025 Ballon d'Or voting. He improved his goal tally from 13 to 14 in a single season, winning over passionate fans alongside his partner, Queen of Italy Cam Reading.
Despite recent health concerns, McTominay is fit and performing well in 2026-27, following World Cup appearances for Scotland. With just over 18 months remaining on his contract at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Napoli face a decision: sell him now or risk losing him without compensation later. Interest from Barcelona has been mentioned before, while rumors now link him to La Liga giants Real Madrid, managed by Mourinho, who originally gave McTominay his break at Manchester United.
Transfer Possibilities for 2027
Talk of McTominay returning to English football has surfaced. When asked about his likely next move, Pat Nevin told GOAL, "That’s a brilliant question. It’s tough because many clubs would want him. I still don’t understand why Manchester United let him go. They didn’t seem to realize his potential, which Scotland helped unlock."
"I wouldn’t be shocked if he stays at Napoli since Italian teams adore him for what he’s done there. Can he take a step up? Absolutely, many clubs would welcome him. He can play multiple positions—a number 10, 6, 8, or even center-back—effectively covering four roles," Nevin said. "Where do I see him playing? Honestly, anywhere he wants."
Madrid or England: Which Direction for McTominay?
Currently focused on recovery after a minor heart procedure, McTominay is tight-lipped about his next move. Approaching 30, he likely has one major transfer left. That could mean expanding his horizons by moving to Spain, settling down further at Napoli, or perhaps circling back to where it all began in England.
