Sergio Busquets Returns to Barcelona as Assistant Coach

Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona. Not in midfield this time, but on the touchline.

The club confirmed on Monday, August 17, that the former captain has returned as assistant coach of Barca Atletic, the reserve side charged with shaping the next wave of talent for the Catalan giants. It is the first formal step in his coaching career, just months after he brought an end to his playing days.

Busquets retired at the end of last year following his spell with Inter Miami, closing a glittering chapter that began at La Masia and turned him into one of the defining midfielders of his generation. His final months as a player came in MLS, but the pull of Barcelona was never going to fade for long.

The first hints of this move surfaced back in October, after an Inter Miami match against the New England Revolution. Asked in the mixed zone whether he saw himself on the bench one day, Busquets didn’t dodge the question.

“I think in the future, yes, but for now I prefer to take a sabbatical year,” he said then.

He took that break. Now the future he talked about has arrived.

Busquets joins the staff of current Barca Atletic head coach Belletti, another familiar face from the club’s modern history. The two former teammates will now share a technical area, tasked with moulding Barcelona’s youngsters to be ready for the first team and driving the reserve side’s push to climb back up the Spanish league structure.

This is not just a symbolic homecoming. While he works alongside Belletti, Busquets will also be deep in study, progressing through his UEFA coaching licences to secure his senior head coaching badges. Training pitch in the morning, coursework and qualifications in the background — the routine of a coach in the making.

His role will be hands-on. Busquets is expected to help guide Barca Atletic day to day, bringing the positional play, reading of space and tactical discipline that defined his own career to a group of players trying to break through. For many of them, he is not just a coach, but the embodiment of the style they are being asked to learn.

The appointment sets out a clear path. Barcelona get one of their greatest midfield brains back inside the building at the very start of his coaching journey. Busquets gets a platform, responsibility, and the time to grow without the glare of a senior dugout.

From here, the question almost asks itself: how long before the man who once anchored Barcelona’s midfield ends up anchoring a first-team bench as head coach?
