Slavko Vincic, the Slovenian official who took charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19, has brought the curtain down on his refereeing career, the Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) confirmed on Monday.

“One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic has officially brought his historic refereeing career at the top of this sport to an end,” read the NZS statement, a simple line that underlined the scale of the moment for Slovenian football.

He exits on the sport’s grandest stage. By handling the World Cup final, the 46‑year‑old from the small Adriatic nation sealed the ultimate appointment for a referee and, in the words of his federation, “consolidated his status as one of the best referees in history”.

A farewell season lined with honours

Vincic’s last campaign did not just end with a showpiece in the United States; it came wrapped in recognition from the game’s historians and his peers.

To cap his farewell season, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him the best referee of the World Cup, praising his “clear and firm disciplinary control that characterizes elite refereeing”. It was an endorsement of the style that had carried him through the top level: decisive, unflustered, and unafraid of the big call when tension peaked.

Italy also added its seal of approval. Vincic received the prestigious “Giulio Campanati” award for his performances at the 2026 World Cup, another sign that his work resonated far beyond Slovenia’s borders.
