St Patrick's Athletic Stuns Shamrock Rovers in FAI Cup Upset

Teenager Sam Rooney struck in extra-time as St Patrick's Athletic roared back from 2-0 down to dump Club Orange FAI Cup holders Shamrock Rovers out in a pulsating third-round tie at Richmond Park.

Rovers looked comfortable at the break. Jonathan Afolabi and Michael Noonan had them two goals up, punishing a Saints side that created more but failed to take their chances. The holders had control, the scoreboard said as much, and Stephen Bradley’s team seemed to have ridden out the early storm.

Then the game flipped.

Luke Turner ignited the comeback, pulling one back to jolt Richmond Park into life and tilt the momentum sharply towards the home side. Rovers, who had spent much of the afternoon under pressure despite their lead, suddenly looked vulnerable.

Deep into stoppage time, the drama peaked. Aidan Keena went down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, sparking immediate controversy and furious Rovers protests. Keena stepped up himself. Ed McGinty guessed right and almost kept it out, but the strike had just enough on it. 2-2, and the cup holders were reeling.

Extra-time belonged to a 17-year-old.

Early in the first period, Rooney arrived with the composure of a veteran to apply the decisive finish, completing a stunning turnaround and sending Richmond Park into delirium. Rovers, already coming off a miserable week, saw it end with their grip on the cup torn away.
