Steven Nzonzi is back in French football. Back in Ligue 2. And back where his career first began to gather real momentum.
USL Dunkerque have confirmed the signing of the 37-year-old midfielder, who had been without a club since leaving Stoke City in early July. It is a bold move from a club with promotion ambitions, and a calculated one: if you want to climb, you start by securing a spine.
Nzonzi arrives off the back of a busy 2025-26 season in the Championship, where he made 31 appearances for the Potters, including 17 starts and one goal. Those numbers matter less than the profile. This is a 2018 World Cup winner dropping into a squad whose average age is just 24. A dressing room full of prospects now has a reference point.
For Dunkerque, the signing is about more than a name on a team sheet. Two years ago, USLD finished fourth in Ligue 2 and felt the sting of falling short of promotion. Born in Colombes, in the Paris region, Nzonzi returns not just to French football but to a familiar rhythm and language. He already knows the demands of Ligue 2 from his Amiens days, and he knows the expectations of a French club with ambition from his spell at Stade Rennais FC between 2020 and 2021. Twenty caps with Les Bleus and a world title ensure his voice will carry weight the moment he walks into the training ground.
The fit is obvious. A young, energetic side trying to crack the top two now has a veteran who has seen almost everything the game can offer. When the tempo needs calming, when the ball needs securing, when a promotion push starts to wobble in March, this is the kind of player you want standing in midfield, pointing, talking, organising.
Dunkerque are not signing the Nzonzi of Sevilla or peak Stoke. They know that.
