Tariq Lamptey Joins QPR for Career Revival

Tariq Lamptey’s career needed a reset. Queens Park Rangers have handed him one.

The Championship side have signed the 25-year-old right-back on a free transfer after his departure from Fiorentina, a move that brings one of English football’s most dynamic full-backs back into London and back into the spotlight.

A career stalled in Florence

Lamptey left Brighton for Fiorentina in September 2025, a switch that was supposed to open a new chapter in Serie A. Instead, it barely got started. A serious knee injury limited him to just two appearances for the Italian club, his progress halted at the very moment he was expected to kick on.

Now, with his contract in Florence over, QPR have moved quickly.

“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club’s website. The message was clear: he feels ready to compete again. “Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”

QPR are banking on that resilience.

From Chelsea prospect to World Cup defender

Lamptey’s journey has never followed a straight line. He came through Chelsea’s academy and broke into the first team with a Premier League debut against Arsenal, a bold, fearless performance that hinted at a long future at Stamford Bridge.

Instead, he chose opportunity over comfort and moved to Brighton, where he became one of the league’s most exciting attacking full-backs. More than 120 appearances for the Seagulls showcased his speed, his aggression, and his willingness to drive forward from deep.

On the international stage, he made an even bigger decision. After representing England at under-21 level, Lamptey switched allegiance to Ghana and went on to play at the 2022 World Cup. He now has 11 senior caps, experience that QPR know carries weight in a Championship dressing room.

QPR’s intent – and Lamptey’s choice

This is not just a player looking for a home. It is also a club trying to send a message.

“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” said QPR chief executive Christian Nourry.

Then came the line that will resonate around the division.

“His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club.”

Lamptey had options. He chose Loftus Road.

QPR have not disclosed the length or terms of his contract, but the intent is obvious: add top-level pedigree, add pace, add personality.

A new season, a fresh start

The timing is no accident. QPR open their Championship campaign away at Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST). A long, unforgiving season awaits, and the margins between mid-table anonymity and a play-off push are thin.

If Lamptey’s body holds and his recovery continues as he believes it will, QPR have secured a defender who can change the tempo of games from right-back. If his resilience matches his words, this free transfer may look anything but cheap by the time the season settles into its rhythm.
