Tchouameni's Future: Stay at Madrid or Move to Manchester United?
Aurelien Tchouameni spent last season carrying far more weight than he should have in Real Madrid’s midfield. On too many nights, he looked like the one steady line in a blurred picture. Now, just as he seemed set to consolidate that role, his name sits at the centre of one of the summer’s biggest transfer plots.

With Casemiro gone to Inter Miami and the spine of their midfield exposed, United are ready to throw serious money and a five-year contract at Tchouameni, according to Jose Felix Diaz on Ruben Martin’s livestream. The plan is clear: rebuild the core, and do it with a player who can anchor a new era at Old Trafford.
United’s original roadmap pointed elsewhere. Mateus Fernandes was the preferred choice, only for the Portuguese midfielder to head to Tottenham from West Ham. That deal forced a pivot. The response has been decisive: Tchouameni is now the main target, and initial contacts over a move that would rank among the window’s biggest are expected in the coming days.
For the Frenchman, the timing is awkward. He heads into France’s quarterfinal against Morocco carrying an injury picked up before the Round of 16 clash with Paraguay, his involvement in doubt and Manu Kone on standby to replace him. While he fights to regain fitness, his club future hangs in the air.
Stay at the Bernabeu or lead at Old Trafford?
On the pitch, Tchouameni did enough last season to justify a central role in Madrid’s plans. He was one of the few midfielders to emerge with credit from a disjointed campaign, and by all accounts he remains keen to stay at the Bernabeu.
But United offer something Madrid cannot guarantee: immediate status and responsibility in the Premier League. At Old Trafford, he would not just be another piece in a crowded engine room. He would be the reference point.
Madrid’s own plans complicate the picture. The club are expected to move for a new central midfielder this summer, with Enzo Fernandez identified as a prime target. If that deal advances, minutes and influence in Madrid’s midfield become harder to protect for anyone, even a performer of Tchouameni’s calibre.
For now, the French international’s priority is simple: get fit, stay on the pitch, and keep his options open. The rest will move quickly once the first phone calls between Madrid and Manchester are made.
Arbeloa lands at Fulham and looks straight back to Madrid
While one Madrid midfielder weighs a potential leap to Manchester, another story is unfolding in London, again with the Bernabeu at its heart.
Alvaro Arbeloa, a former Real Madrid defender and coach, has taken over at Fulham on a three-year deal. Barely installed at Craven Cottage, he has already turned his gaze back towards his old club, identifying three Madrid players for his new project: Franco Mastantuono, Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia.

From Madrid’s side, each case carries a different weight.
Fran Garcia’s path appears the clearest. He has been strongly linked with Real Betis, with a €4 million deal already progressing and close to completion. The arrival of Marc Cucurella and the presence of Alvaro Carreras have effectively shut the door on Fran’s minutes at the Bernabeu. For him, a move feels inevitable; the only question is whether it is Betis or a late push from Fulham.
Gonzalo and Mastantuono sit in a different category. Both are understood to be in Jose Mourinho’s plans, at least through pre-season. The Portuguese coach wants to see them up close before deciding whether to keep them in the squad or open the door to moves.
Three players, three crossroads for Madrid
For Real Madrid, Fulham’s interest is useful but delicate.
A loan for Mastantuono could offer exactly what a young talent needs: regular Premier League football and a chance to harden his game away from the pressure cooker of the Bernabeu. If Mourinho cannot promise consistent minutes this season, a temporary spell under Arbeloa might be ideal.
Gonzalo is different. Selling a young player with upside is a far bigger call than sending out a teenager on loan. Any permanent move would have to make sense not only financially but also in terms of squad depth and long-term planning.
Fran Garcia’s situation, by contrast, is almost purely logistical. With Cucurella and Carreras ahead of him, Madrid have little room to offer. His exit feels like a matter of when and where, not if.
In the background, Arbeloa’s presence offers Madrid a subtle advantage. Having a trusted former player eager to take on talents whose futures need resolving gives the club a softer landing for difficult decisions. It creates pathways instead of dead ends.
The next few weeks will tell whether United turn admiration for Tchouameni into a formal bid, and whether Fulham convert Arbeloa’s wish list into hard offers. Between Manchester’s need for a new midfield leader and London’s push to build around Madrid know‑how, the Bernabeu could quietly become one of the summer’s busiest crossroads.
