Tottenham Targeting Cody Gakpo in Major Summer Rebuild
Tottenham are circling Cody Gakpo, and this time it feels serious.
Ange Postecoglou’s rebuild has already torn through the early summer window, with Spurs throwing around £237m on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. That spree, backed up by shrewd free transfers for Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, has reset the spine of the side from back to front.
Now comes the glamorous part: the attack.
Savinho lined up on the right
On the right flank, Tottenham have locked in on Savinho. The Manchester City winger has told the champions he wants out and has given the nod to a move to north London. Talks between the clubs have been running for a while, with a package of around £60m understood to be enough to get it done.
That deal would give Postecoglou the direct, electric wide threat he craves. It was supposed to be complemented by another versatile forward: Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi.
Spurs were less than a day away from submitting their opening bid for the striker when disaster struck. A fractured metatarsal, surgery, and a three-to-four-month layoff later, Kroupi’s move is off the table until at least the next window. The plan needed a new name. A big one.
Gakpo moves to the top of the list
Enter Cody Gakpo.
Fabrizio Romano has already flagged the Dutchman as one to monitor, noting that Tottenham “really like the player” and urging fans to keep an eye on the situation in the coming weeks. That interest has now sharpened.
Journalist Paul O’Keefe reported on Saturday that Gakpo is “now a leading contender as Tottenham look to add to their attacking options.” In other words, Spurs have moved him from the long list to the front row.
Gakpo, 27, naturally operates off the left, but his time at Liverpool has shown he can comfortably step inside and lead the line. That dual threat mirrors what Tottenham were seeking in Kroupi: a wide forward who can morph into a central striker when required, giving Postecoglou tactical flexibility and cover across the front.
For a squad already heavy on technical quality, Gakpo’s ability to drift into pockets, link play and finish from different angles would add another layer to an attack that still feels a piece short of truly elite depth.
Liverpool set a Premier League benchmark price
Liverpool, though, are not opening the door cheaply.
Anfield Watch report that the club have placed a £72m valuation on Gakpo, a figure they say is built off Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona. That transfer has effectively become the benchmark for high-end Premier League wide forwards, and Liverpool are determined not to undersell one of their prime assets.
“Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m (€85m),” the outlet stated, adding that Gordon’s switch to Spain has been used as the “base” for their number.
It’s a bold stance, but one that fits the current market. Proven, versatile attackers in their mid-20s, with international pedigree and Premier League experience, rarely come cheap. Tottenham know that as well as anyone after this window’s early business.
A double-wing gamble that could define Spurs’ attack
If Spurs manage to land both Savinho and Gakpo, Postecoglou will walk into the new season with a radically retooled forward line: pace on the right, intelligence and flexibility on the left, and options through the middle.
The pressure is now on the negotiation rooms. City’s stance on Savinho, Liverpool’s resolve over Gakpo and Tottenham’s willingness to push past the £300m mark in one summer will decide how far this attacking revolution goes.
Spurs have made their move. The question is whether they are ready to pay Champions League prices for a front line they believe can take them there.
