Tottenham Break Transfer Record for Defender Alice Sombath
Tottenham have underlined their ambition in the women’s game by signing France defender Alice Sombath from Lyon for a club-record fee, a statement move for a side intent on closing the gap to the WSL elite.
The fee for the 22-year-old has not been disclosed, but it eclipses the amount Spurs paid for Signe Gaupset in January, reported to be more than £375,000. For a club that only recently flirted with the wrong end of the table, it is a significant outlay – and a clear signal.
From Lyon’s dynasty to Spurs’ project
Sombath arrives from the most decorated club in European women’s football. She spent six years at Lyon, eight-time European champions, having joined from Paris Saint-Germain and signing her first professional contract there in 2020.
In that time she collected medals at a rate that most players only dream of. A Champions League title in her second season, with two appearances in that campaign and a place on the bench in the final. Five league titles. Two Coupe de France trophies. She has grown up in a dressing room where winning is non-negotiable.
Now she swaps that environment for a project still in the making in north London.
“The league is very competitive, every game is a tough game and that’s what I’m most excited about,” Sombath said after completing the move. She has watched Spurs’ rapid improvement from afar. “I saw that Spurs had a very good season last year. My qualities can bring something to the team, even though I know they already have a lot.”
It is an intriguing step: a serial winner at 22 choosing a club on the rise rather than one already at the summit.
The defender built for Ho’s Spurs
Head coach Martin Ho has been clear about the type of player he wants to build around, and Sombath fits it. His description of her sounded less like a polite welcome and more like a blueprint being ticked off.
He called her a defender who “fits the profile of what we’re building”, highlighting the maturity she has already shown and Spurs’ belief that she can grow into a top player “within our environment”.
Ho’s assessment of her style was even more revealing. “Alice is an aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession, competitive in her duels, and has the ambition to keep improving every day. Those characteristics are really important to us, and we’re excited to help her take the next step in her career while strengthening the squad.”
Aggressive, comfortable on the ball, relentless in her development – it is exactly what a side chasing the established top four needs at the back.
Six signings, six priorities
Sombath is the sixth new arrival of the summer for Spurs, joining Shekiera Martinez, Kirsty Hanson, Victoria Pelova, Caitlin Dijkstra and Selma Panengstuen. This is not scattergun recruitment; inside the club, there is satisfaction that all six of their priority targets are already through the door.
Those deals have been done early, allowing Ho and his staff a full pre-season to shape a squad that now has depth as well as quality. For a team that surged to fifth last season, that detail matters. They are not just buying talent; they are buying time to mould it.
From survival to ambition
Tottenham’s trajectory in the WSL explains the urgency. They finished 11th in the league the season before last, flirting with real trouble. Last season they climbed to an impressive fifth, just four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
The gap to the very top remains stark: 19 points separated them from champions Manchester City. That is the chasm Sombath and the rest of this new wave are being asked to narrow.
Spurs have responded not with caution, but with a record transfer fee and a defender raised in the most demanding environment in Europe. The medals are already on Sombath’s shelf. The question now is whether she can help put Tottenham’s first serious silverware on theirs.
