Towson Women's Soccer Dominates Bucknell 3–1
TOWSON, Md. – Towson needed a response and produced it early, striking three times before halftime to beat Bucknell 3–1 in Sunday’s non-league women’s soccer clash at Tiger Field.
The hosts were on the front foot almost immediately. Just over 14 minutes in, Meron Koro reacted quickest when a rebound spilled loose after a save from Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah McFarland. With McFarland stranded, Koro calmly rolled the ball into an empty net to open the scoring.
Towson smelled vulnerability and kept pressing. Koro nearly doubled the lead minutes later, only to miss the target, but the warning signs were clear. The breakthrough for real separation came from the bench.
Substitute Jayla Caldwell changed the game in a ruthless five-minute burst. Both of her goals came from corner kicks, and both underlined Towson’s superiority on set pieces. The first was textbook: a clean, decisive header that flew past McFarland. The second was more opportunistic, born from a failed Bucknell clearance that dropped invitingly at Caldwell’s feet. She took full advantage, lifting a lob over McFarland and into the far-side netting to make it 3–0 before the break.
Bucknell did have a look at goal in the first half. At the 20-minute mark, Gaby Parker sliced through two defenders to carve out space in the box, only to be denied by Towson keeper Keagan Williams, who raced out and narrowed the angle to smother the chance.
Down three at halftime and on a three-game skid, Bucknell could have folded. Instead, the Bison came out with more purpose and control after the interval, outshooting Towson 10–9 in the second half and finally finding a way through from a dead ball.
In the 58th minute, the visitors earned a set piece and made it count. Louisa Thomsen met Clare Nemsick’s delivery with a firm header that crashed off the inside of the left post and just crossed the line. It was Thomsen’s first goal of the season, and Nemsick’s second assist, a small but important spark for a side trying to claw back momentum.
Bucknell kept pushing. Bella Connell drove into the right side of the penalty area on a promising run, only to run out of room before she could get a shot away. The Bison generated looks, but not the flurry they needed to truly unsettle Towson.
The Tigers still carried plenty of threat of their own, finishing with a 21–16 edge in shots and an 8–4 advantage in corner kicks. Williams anchored the Towson back line with five saves, including that key first-half stop on Parker. For Bucknell, McFarland made four saves in the opening 45 minutes, before Reese Dolan came on to post 45 shutout minutes with two saves after the break.
Towson moves to 2-2-2, with a convincing first-half performance the foundation for the win. Bucknell, now 3-5 and on a four-game slide, turns immediately toward a critical stretch: a trip to Villanova on Thursday at 4 p.m., then the Patriot League opener at home against Lehigh on Sept. 19. The question now is whether this second-half response in Towson becomes a turning point, or just another missed chance to reset the season.
