Transfer Frenzy: Tottenham, Arsenal, and United in Action
The World Cup is supposed to slow everything down. It has done the opposite. While nations scrap for a place in history, England’s biggest clubs are tearing up their balance sheets.
Tottenham are rewriting what is possible. Arsenal are testing the resolve of Paris and Newcastle. Manchester United are already on Plan B, C and D. And that is before Barcelona even get to the idea of a world-record bid for a centre-back.
This is a summer with no brakes.
Spurs smash records – twice
Tottenham have not just dipped into the market. They have dived in head first.
First came Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in a staggering £100million deal, prising away a key midfielder and setting a new club record. Barely had the ink dried before Spurs went again.
Mateus Fernandes is now through the door from West Ham for £85m, another record fee, another statement that this is a new era in north London. The 21-year-old has signed a six-year contract and arrives as the heartbeat of Roberto De Zerbi’s evolving side.
De Zerbi has long been an admirer. He wanted a midfielder who could take the ball under pressure, drive a team forward and set the tempo in the Premier League’s chaos. Fernandes, he believes, is that player: technically sharp, tactically intelligent, relentless without the ball and brave when the game tightens.
The Brazilian echoed that ambition, calling Spurs a “massive club” and pointing to the head coach as a decisive factor. He talked about a shared vision: intensity, energy, a team that goes onto the pitch to fight and to win every game. It is exactly the rhetoric Tottenham fans want to hear from a record signing.
And they are not done.
Eli Junior Kroupi of Bournemouth has now emerged as the next big target, with Spurs prepared to go beyond £80m to get him. De Zerbi wants his business wrapped up before pre-season starts next week. Tottenham are also keeping tabs on Rafael Leao at AC Milan and Manchester City’s Savinho.
This is no gentle rebuild. It is a full-scale assault on the top of the table.
Arsenal push on Barcola and test Newcastle’s nerve
Across north London, Arsenal are moving with their own brand of aggression.
Bradley Barcola has shot up their wishlist as Mikel Arteta looks for a left winger to sharpen his attack. The club have scouted the France international at the World Cup, where he scored in a 3-0 win over Sweden, and the signals from Paris are changing.
Paris Saint-Germain had initially shut the door on any sale. That stance is softening. Barcola is understood to be reluctant to sign a new contract without a clearer path to regular starts next season, and PSG are now thought to be open to a deal at the right price.
The right price, though, will be enormous. Figures above the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson are being floated. Arsenal have been encouraged that a move is possible, but this is the elite end of the market: any misstep, and the chance is gone.
At the same time, the Gunners have turned the spotlight on Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal held initial talks with the Brazilian’s representatives to gauge his situation and then tested the water with an informal proposal of around £55m.
Newcastle rejected it. Firmly. Yet the approach has left a mark.
Reports on Tyneside suggest the pursuit may have “turned the head” of Guimaraes, who has been central to Newcastle’s rise. Arsenal sense an opportunity, even if Newcastle insist it will take a huge fee to drag him out of St James’ Park.
Arsenal’s outgoing business could also reshape their squad. Leandro Trossard, currently at the World Cup with Belgium and in good form with two goals in three games, has attracted a £17m bid from Besiktas. Arsenal have accepted the offer for a player now seen as surplus to requirements, but Trossard has yet to decide whether to swap the Premier League champions for Turkey.
This is a squad being fine-tuned for another title charge, and there will be casualties.
United miss out and scramble for midfield solutions
While Spurs and Arsenal land blows, Manchester United are having to absorb them.
Tottenham’s capture of both Tonali and Fernandes has left United looking elsewhere for midfield reinforcements. Michael Carrick and the INEOS hierarchy have drawn up a fresh shortlist as they prepare for a return to Champions League football.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is high on that list. United admire his blend of control and creativity, but the Cherries have no intention of selling. Scott is under contract until 2028 and valued at around £80m. Bournemouth would rather extend his deal than cash in.
Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund is another option, as is Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni – the kind of “dream signing” that transforms a midfield if a deal can be prised out of the Bernabeu. Carlos Baleba at Brighton and Fulham’s Sander Berge are also being monitored.
United still appreciate Tonali, but with the Italian in advanced talks and now effectively gone to Spurs, attention has shifted. The club need control in midfield and depth for Europe. The names are on the table. The pressure is to turn one of them into a signature.
Barcelona eye Saliba in audacious move
Then there is Barcelona, watching the Premier League’s arms race and plotting a move that would shake it again.
William Saliba, Arsenal’s defensive pillar, has emerged as one of Barça’s top targets. The Frenchman has become one of the most complete centre-backs in Europe, and the Catalan club know it will take something extraordinary to tempt Arsenal.
Reports suggest Arsenal would only even consider a sale for a world-record fee for a defender, in the region of £130m. That figure underlines Saliba’s status at the Emirates. He is not just another asset. He is a cornerstone.
Barcelona are weighing it up. Whether they can actually assemble such a bid, in their current financial landscape, is another matter entirely.
Forest pull the trigger as Glasner waits in the wings
Away from the transfer frenzy, Nottingham Forest have delivered one of the more ruthless decisions of the summer.
Vitor Pereira has been sacked as head coach, and he did not hide his shock. He said the decision came as a “complete surprise” and “without any warning”, arriving just two minutes before a June break clause in his contract was due to expire.
Pereira only took over in February, signed an 18-month deal and steered Forest to Premier League safety and a Europa League semi-final. He leaves with a sense of pride in what was built, but the club have chosen a different path.
Oliver Glasner, who recently left Crystal Palace, is expected to take over. Forest, clearly, are not content with mere survival.
Juventus circle Brobbey after World Cup surge
On the continent, Juventus are hunting goals.
Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey has forced his way into their thinking after an impressive World Cup with the Netherlands. At 24, and with his stock rising, he is being considered as an alternative to first-choice target Randal Kolo Muani.
Kolo Muani is surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain after a miserable loan spell at Tottenham last season and a previous stint on loan at Juve. Brobbey offers a different route, a fresh profile for a club rebuilding its forward line.
The window has only just opened, yet the numbers are already eye-watering and the consequences enormous. Tottenham are throwing punches, Arsenal are probing at the elite, United are chasing, Barcelona are lurking and Forest have ripped up a plan that had just started to work.
