Trezeguet Out for a Month with Hamstring Tear
Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” faces four weeks on the sidelines after tearing his hamstring, Saudi club Al-Riyadh confirmed on Wednesday.
The club announced the diagnosis on their official X account, ending any lingering hope that the injury he suffered against Al-Khaleej might be minor.
The Egyptian winger went down early in Al-Riyadh’s Saudi Roshn League clash on Monday, collapsing to the turf in the 13th minute. He left the pitch in tears, a worrying sight for both club and country with a crucial international window looming.
Medical examinations later revealed a hamstring tear. Trezeguet will now return to Cairo to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of Egypt’s national-team medical staff.
Impact on Egypt's National Team
For Hossam Hassan, the timing could hardly be worse.
The Egypt coach is preparing for a key camp starting on 17 September, but he will have to do without one of his most trusted attacking weapons. The injury rules Trezeguet out of the Pharaohs’ opening fixtures in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
- Egypt host Angola on Friday 25 September at Cairo Stadium
- Travel to Juba to face South Sudan on Tuesday 29 September
Both matches will now go ahead without the former Aston Villa man, whose blend of work rate, direct running and big-game experience has long made him a pillar of the national side.
Trezeguet, one of the most seasoned internationals in the current squad, sits at the heart of Egypt’s attacking plans. For a team looking to start its AFCON qualifying campaign with authority, losing that influence is more than just an inconvenience.
The stage is suddenly open. Who steps up to fill the void in September could shape Egypt’s path to 2027.
