Vinicius Jr's Future Uncertain as Arsenal Eyes Bold Transfer
Vinicius Jr is heading back to work on Monday, but the noise around his future is only getting louder.
Jose Mourinho confirmed after Real Madrid’s 2-2 friendly draw with Fiorentina in Austria that Vinicius will report for pre-season as planned, alongside Brahim Diaz and new signing Bernardo Silva. On paper, it’s a routine return from holiday. In reality, it drops him straight into the middle of one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer stand-offs.
The 26-year-old has been resting since Brazil’s shock 2-1 World Cup exit to Norway in the round of 16 on July 5. While he has been away, his contract situation at the Bernabeu has drifted into dangerous territory: he has entered the final 12 months of his deal, and talks over an extension remain stuck.
That stalemate has lit a beacon over north London.
Arsenal, fresh from their Premier League title win and operating with the swagger of champions, are watching closely. The Independent reported over the weekend that the Gunners have made significant progress towards what would be the boldest transfer in the club’s history, having agreed the outline of a personal package with Vinicius Jr.
The message is clear: if Madrid leave the door even slightly ajar, Arsenal are ready to walk through it.
From Spain’s side, the mood is hardening. According to ESPN, Madrid are open to the possibility of selling Vinicius if no breakthrough comes on a new contract. The club are refusing to improve their latest renewal offer, and a long-running impasse now threatens to push one of their marquee forwards towards the exit.
It comes at a time when Madrid’s own recruitment drive has hit turbulence. Their pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, in a deal worth more than £100million, has stalled. They remain intent on prising Rodri from Manchester City, having already pushed through a flurry of major signings: Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate and Carlos Espi have all arrived in a sweeping rebuild.
Against that backdrop, Vinicius Jr’s future becomes both a financial and sporting calculation. Lose him for free next year, or cash in now and reshape again.
Arsenal, for their part, are not waiting around in other areas. Their chase of Bruno Guimaraes, Vinicius’ Brazil team-mate, is finally nearing the finish line. The Newcastle midfielder is widely expected to undergo a medical on Monday, with an £80m move to the Emirates now close to completion.
Guimaraes had also been due back from his post-World Cup break on Monday, scheduled to rejoin Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga, Spain. That plan is set to be ripped up. Instead of checking into a Spanish training base, he is poised to step into a new role at the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.
Newcastle, already bracing for life without their talismanic playmaker, are moving on to replacements. They have turned their attention to Inter Milan’s Petar Sucic as a potential successor, after confirming the £25m signing of Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga.
So Monday becomes a pivot point. Vinicius Jr walks back through the doors at Madrid with his future unresolved. Bruno Guimaraes looks set to walk out of Newcastle’s project and into Arsenal’s. One giant of Europe is wrestling with a contract standoff. Another is trying to turn domestic dominance into something even bigger.
If Arsenal land Guimaraes and keep pushing for Vinicius Jr, the question will not be whether they are serious. It will be how far Madrid are willing to go to keep hold of a forward they once saw as untouchable.
