Wayne Rooney Criticizes Cristiano Ronaldo’s Controversial Exit from Portugal Squad
Wayne Rooney has expressed strong disapproval of Cristiano Ronaldo's conduct after the forward abruptly left the Portugal national team camp during the recent international break. The former Manchester United star questioned how his old teammate managed the fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Rooney Denounces Ronaldo’s Walkout
The retired England striker sharply criticized Ronaldo’s decision to quit the squad following a dispute over playing time. Ronaldo, at 41 years old, was left on the bench for the entire UEFA Nations League match against Norway, despite warming up for half an hour. Before the next game versus Denmark, he walked out and issued a public statement accusing his manager of breaking promises while drawing comparisons between himself and legends Pele and Diego Maradona.
Public Statement Triggers Backlash
Interestingly, Ronaldo had previously enjoyed success under Jorge Jesus at club level with Al-Nassr, even endorsing him for the Portugal managerial role after the 2026 World Cup. Yet his choice to publicly apologize to teammates while openly criticizing his coach angered both the team and the Portuguese Football Federation.
Speaking on The United Stand, Rooney said:
My thoughts on Ronaldo are just: Why? It was the same day Lionel Messi announced his retirement from Argentina, and for him to leave the Portugal squad like that and put out that statement… it’s wrong in every sense. To undermine your manager, your teammates, and the federation—everything about it was wrong. From a football perspective, as a teammate and manager, it wasn’t nice to see. Every player has to finish their international career properly, and unfortunately, he’s not handling it well. It’s uncomfortable to watch.
Rooney Upset by Ronaldo’s Media Demands
Both players shared successful years at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning three Premier League titles and a Champions League before Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid. Despite this history, Rooney was especially upset by Ronaldo’s attempt to instruct Jorge Jesus on what to say during a prearranged press conference.
Rooney added:
You can’t tell a manager what to say. That crosses a line beyond anything I’ve seen.
Portugal Future Uncertain Amid Disciplinary Investigation
Ronaldo’s future with the national team now remains unclear after the Portuguese Football Federation imposed a provisional suspension on October 10. An independent disciplinary inquiry is underway, barring him from any national team duties until further notice. Meanwhile, Jorge Jesus has upheld his position but left open the possibility for Ronaldo’s return. The striker has stated he remains ready for selection when called upon.
