World Cup Screening Brawl in Johor Bahru

A pre-dawn World Cup screening in Johor Bahru erupted into chaos when a brawl broke out during the televised final between Spain and Argentina, ending with eight men in handcuffs.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said officers received a report of the incident at 5.40am, with the fight captured in a two-minute, 36-second video that has since spread rapidly across social media. The footage shows a packed venue turning violent as tempers flare, chairs appear to fly, and what began as a shared football spectacle descends into a melee.

Police moved quickly. Between 10am and 11am, all eight suspects were arrested around the Taman Setia Indah area, not far from where the incident is believed to have taken place.

“All the suspects were arrested around the Taman Setia Indah area not long after the incident was reported. Checks found that three of the suspects have criminal records,” Ab Rahaman was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

The clash is believed to have started during the screening of the World Cup final, with emotions around the Spain–Argentina showdown spilling over into confrontation. What triggered the first blow remains under investigation, but the scale of the fight and the presence of weapons have pushed the case into serious territory.

Rahaman confirmed that the suspects will be brought to the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court tomorrow for a remand application. Police are investigating the case under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which covers rioting with weapons.

A night meant to celebrate the world’s biggest game now sits on the court’s docket, with the legal fallout set to outlast the final whistle.
