WTA Rankings Update: Alex Eala Hits New High, Leylah Fernandez and Harriet Dart Climb, Victoria Mboko Drops

Alex Eala stands out among several players affected by the latest Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings update. She is preparing for the conclusion of her 2026 season at the Hong Kong Open, a tournament marking the end of what has been a breakthrough year for the young Filipina.

The 21-year-old has struggled to replicate the success she found earlier this year, most recently falling to Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Open. Despite not reaching a semi-final in her past seven WTA events, Eala’s ranking has improved.

Her notable 2025 season, which included a surprise run to the Miami Open semi-finals and breaking into the top 100 for the first time, proved it was no fluke. Eala secured her maiden WTA title in Washington D.C. and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2026, marking her best Grand Slam performance yet.

Starting 2026 outside the top 50, Eala climbed to world number 18 after the US Open. She slipped one spot before Tokyo but now jumps two places to achieve a new career-high ranking of world number 17. This marks a significant milestone as she heads to Hong Kong, with potential to climb further if she advances deep in the WTA 250 event.

Currently, she trails world number 16 Naomi Osaka by only 26 points, making an overtake at Hong Kong a real target that could improve her positioning in next year’s Grand Slam draws.

Leylah Fernandez and Harriet Dart Make Gains; Victoria Mboko Faces Setbacks

Besides Eala, other players have experienced shifts in the updated rankings. The Tokyo Open was the major event last week, won by Diana Shnaider, who moved up to world number 11. Yet, runner-up Leylah Fernandez enjoyed the largest jump.

Fernandez, having reached three finals since the US Open and winning the Singapore Open, rose from outside the top 30 to number 18. This is her highest rank since August 2022.

At the Guangzhou tournament, British player Harriet Dart captured her first WTA title. Previously ranked beyond the top 100, Dart vaulted 31 spots to world number 84, securing direct entry into the Australian Open.

On the downside, Victoria Mboko dropped in the rankings due to injury absence since the grass court season. Unable to defend her Hong Kong Open title, Mboko lost the 250 points gained last year. From a career-best of world number nine earlier this year, she slid five places down to number 20.

Another former top 10 player, two-time Grand Slam finalist Amanda Anisimova, also fell five spots. Expected to build on her strong 2025, Anisimova's progress has been hampered by a wrist injury, dropping her from number three at the start of the year to number 22 now.
