Xabi Alonso Faces Early Challenges at Chelsea Pre-Season Tour
Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea tenure has its first bump in the road before a competitive ball has even been kicked.
The new head coach will head out on the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia without two of his summer recruits, after Emanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda were both left out of the 27-man travelling party for the camp in Sydney.
New faces, early problems
Chelsea’s squad list does include their latest arrival, defender Marco Palestra, signed from Atalanta for £43 million as part of another ambitious rebuild at Stamford Bridge. The 19-year-old joins a group designed to give Alonso his first extended look at the core he will work with in his debut campaign in English football.
But the absences of Emegha and Quenda cut into that plan.
Deals for the pair were struck well before the summer window gathered pace – Emegha arriving from Strasbourg, Quenda from Sporting Lisbon – yet both only linked up fully with the club in recent weeks. This tour was meant to be their first real audition under Alonso. Instead, they stay behind.
Emegha injured, Quenda unexplained
Emegha’s omission at least comes with a clear explanation. According to British outlet The Sun, the 23-year-old Dutch striker suffered a hamstring injury in a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Bromley, a game Chelsea won 3-0.
He even scored in it. João Pedro, Jimmy-Jay Gittens and Emegha all found the net before the forward’s evening took a sharp turn, pulling up and leaving Alonso with an immediate fitness concern in his attacking options.
Quenda’s situation is different. And more opaque.
The 19-year-old Portugal right winger has simply not been named in the group heading to Australia, with no public reason given for his absence. No injury has been disclosed, no formal explanation offered. For a teenager looking to make an early impression on a new manager, it is a frustratingly quiet start.
Chelsea have left the door open. If Emegha’s hamstring settles and Quenda’s situation clears, both could yet join the squad later in the tour. For now, though, Alonso will begin his first major pre-season block without them.
World Cup hangover
The absentees do not end there. Several of Chelsea’s headline names are also missing after deep runs at the World Cup.
Chief among them is Morgan Rogers, the £117 million signing from Aston Villa, whose fee underlines the scale of Chelsea’s investment in attacking talent. Club captain Reece James is another notable name granted extra rest after a gruelling summer with England.
Both are on post-tournament breaks following long seasons and a demanding World Cup campaign, and will rejoin the group later as preparations for the new season intensify.
For Alonso, it means a curious start: a new job, a fresh squad, a global tour – and key pieces either injured, resting or absent without explanation. The work has begun, but the full picture of his Chelsea is still waiting to step onto the pitch.
