Xabi Alonso rules Moises Caicedo out of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie with Leeds
Chelsea will have to navigate their Carabao Cup clash with Leeds without Moises Caicedo, as Xabi Alonso moved to shut down any chance of another rushed comeback for the midfielder.
Caicedo, who missed the opening two league games against Fulham and Luton, had only just returned in the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton. His comeback lasted 14 minutes. Then came the grim sight: the Ecuador captain signalling he could not continue, walking off with another setback just as he was trying to find rhythm.
He sat out Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, and in the aftermath at the Emirates, Alonso cut a reflective figure. The Chelsea head coach conceded he and the club may have pushed Caicedo back too quickly for the Brighton game and vowed not to repeat “the same mistake again”.
That promise is now being kept.
Speaking on Tuesday afternoon ahead of Wednesday night’s tie at Stamford Bridge, Alonso was blunt when asked if Caicedo was ready.
“No. Not yet. Still not ready to go. Not the moment to take a too-early risk. We go game by game with them. It’s too early,” he said.
The message was clear: no gambles, not even for a cup tie Chelsea badly want to use as a launchpad for their season.
There is some encouragement, though. When pressed on whether Caicedo could be involved against Hull, Alonso allowed a small window of optimism.
“Potentially, yes. But we need to wait and probably Thursday or Friday we will know more.”
So Leeds comes too soon, Hull remains a possibility, and Chelsea’s medical staff have the final say over the next 48 hours.
Alonso did at least confirm one defensive boost. Levi Colwill is available again, offering stability at the back at a time when Chelsea’s midfield options are being stretched.
Marco Palestra, however, stays on the sidelines. His absence clearly frustrates Alonso, not because of what Palestra has already done, but because of what he was about to bring.
“Especially for (Palestra). He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the PL. He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”
The timing of that injury stripped Chelsea of a fresh option just as the campaign began. Now they wait for him as well as Caicedo, two players Alonso clearly sees as central to the project.
Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha will also miss the Leeds game, further thinning the options as Alonso juggles his squad in a congested early schedule.
Leeds, by contrast, travel south with far fewer concerns. They carry what is close to a clean bill of health, though Daniel James must prove his fitness late on as he tries to shake off back and hamstring issues.
Chelsea, then, go into a knockout tie with key names missing and recent regrets over injury management still fresh. The question now is simple: can Alonso’s side find a way through without their midfield enforcer, or will this careful caution come at a cost in the cup?
