Xabi Alonso's Premier League Debut: Chelsea vs Fulham Derby
Xabi Alonso steps into the Premier League with no soft launch, no gentle easing-in period. His first act as Chelsea head coach is a short trip across west London and straight into a derby at Craven Cottage, with local pride immediately on the line.
On the opposite bench, another familiar face from his playing days. Alvaro Arbeloa, a former teammate and rival, also makes his Premier League managerial debut, charged with steering Fulham into a new era after Marco Silva.

Alonso’s Chelsea reset

Selection-wise, he already has problems to solve. Danny Welbeck faces a late fitness test, while Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha are both ruled out with injuries. At the back, Wesley Fofana serves a suspension carried over from last season, leaving Alonso to reshuffle his defensive options on day one.

Arbeloa’s Fulham reboot
Fulham, for their part, walk into a season of questions. Can they hold their ground, or better it, without Marco Silva? Can Arbeloa, in his first Premier League job, keep the club stable while trying to evolve the style?
He leans on what he knows. The new head coach has turned to Real Madrid connections in the market, and ex-Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios could both be handed Premier League debuts in front of a home crowd.
Team news is relatively kind. Tom Cairney misses out with a knee injury, depriving Fulham of experience and control in midfield. At the back, Joachim Andersen serves the final match of his three-game ban after his red card against Bournemouth in May, forcing Arbeloa to tweak his defensive core.
Even so, the starting XI has a familiar spine, with Bernd Leno in goal and a strong supporting cast in front of him.

For Alonso, it’s a chance to show that Chelsea’s lavish summer outlay has a clear plan behind it. For Arbeloa, it’s an opportunity to prove Fulham won’t simply drift backwards without Silva.
Only one of them can walk away from their first Premier League night with the derby, and the narrative, on their side.
