Yassine Zabiri: Ready to Lead Morocco's Attack at AFCON
Yassine Zabiri has never hidden what he wants. He doesn’t just want to be in the Morocco squad. He wants the responsibility that comes with leading the line for the Atlas Lions.
The Racing Santander striker, speaking to DAZN, was asked bluntly if he felt ready to spearhead Morocco’s attack. His answer was just as direct.
“Yes, I think so. I work all year round, and I hope we continue in this manner. We will keep working so that the team earns the coach's trust, as he is the one who makes the decisions.”
No bravado. No empty promises. Just a forward who believes his graft can turn minutes into a starting role under coach Mohamed Ouahbi as the Africa Cup of Nations looms into view.
A childhood dream in a national shirt
For Zabiri, every call-up carries more than tactical significance. It carries family history and the weight of a childhood dream.
“It is an honour for me and for my whole family, as this was a dream I had since my childhood,” he said. “Now we are enjoying these moments, and after that we will see what happens.”
That mix of gratitude and hunger defines his current moment. He has broken through to the national team picture, but he is clearly not content just to be a name on the squad list. He wants to turn those “moments” into a permanent place in Morocco’s attacking hierarchy.
Eyes on AFCON glory
The target is clear: the Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco arrive among the contenders, and Zabiri wants to be at the heart of that push, not watching it unfold from the fringes.
“God willing, we will go to the Africa Cup of Nations and reach as far as possible. I hope we are crowned with the title,” he concluded.
No talk of settling for a respectable run. He is speaking the language of a player who sees Morocco as a team built to compete for the trophy, not just participate in the tournament.
Club test before continental ambitions
All of this ambition comes as Racing Santander prepare for one of the biggest domestic tests of their season. Real Madrid visit next Sunday in the 11th round of La Liga, a stage where any forward with international aspirations knows every touch is judged, every movement scanned.
For Zabiri, it is the perfect platform: a chance to convince his club’s supporters, his national coach, and perhaps most importantly himself, that he is ready to carry the weight of the Atlas Lions’ attack when Africa’s biggest prize is on the line.
