Youri Tielemans Apologizes to Aston Villa Fans

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to calm a storm of his own making, issuing a public apology to Aston Villa fans after appearing to describe Manchester United as a “bigger” club.

The Belgium international, 29, joined United this summer when the Old Trafford side activated a £35m release clause in his Villa contract, signing him to a five-year deal. His departure ended a three-year spell at Villa Park, where he arrived from Leicester City in 2023, played 134 games and scored 10 goals.

On United’s pre-season tour, Tielemans spoke warmly about his former club, crediting Villa with reviving his career and sharpening his game.

“[They put me] back to my best level,” he said.

Then came the line that lit the fuse.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”

Those words travelled fast. Sections of the Villa support, who had embraced Tielemans as a key part of the club’s rise back into European contention, reacted angrily to what they saw as a slight on their club’s status and ambition.

The midfielder responded within a day, taking to Instagram to clarify his stance and accept responsibility for how the comments landed.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote on Thursday.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

“Wishing the club the best in the future.”

It was a clear attempt to draw a line under an early flashpoint in his United career, while still acknowledging the role Villa played in restoring his reputation at the top level. Whether Villa fans accept the apology is another matter entirely, but Tielemans has nailed his colours to the mast now. His next judgments will be made on the pitch, in a different shade of red.
