Youri Tielemans did not need long to discover how quickly the mood can turn in modern football.
Barely weeks after swapping Aston Villa for Manchester United in a £35 million move, the Belgian midfielder has already been forced into a public apology to his former club’s supporters, after a clumsy choice of words lit up social media during United’s pre-season tour.
From praise to a flashpoint
Tielemans, 29, had started out on safe ground. Reflecting on his time at Villa, he credited the club with helping him rediscover his form after joining from Leicester City in the summer of 2023. Across 134 appearances, he contributed 10 goals and 25 assists and became a central part of Unai Emery’s project.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them,” he told reporters.
In isolation, it was a blunt, perhaps honest, assessment of the traditional hierarchy in English football. “Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote. “I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future. Wishing the club the best in the future.”
No excuses. No attempt to blame context or misquoting. Just an admission that he had misjudged the tone.
The apology underlined the respect he insists he still holds for a club where he rebuilt his reputation and played a key role in one of the most successful periods in Villa’s modern history.
A new chapter at Old Trafford
The storm arrives at a delicate moment for Tielemans. Manchester United activated a release clause to bring him to Old Trafford on a five-year deal that runs until 2031, a major commitment to a player whose last campaign was disrupted by fitness problems.
Calf and ankle issues restricted him to 35 appearances in all competitions last season. When fit, he remained influential, but United are gambling on a fully firing version of the midfielder who once dominated midfields for Leicester and then slotted into Emery’s high-intensity system at Villa.
His international summer suggested there is plenty left in the tank. Tielemans went to the World Cup with Belgium and helped them reach the quarter-finals before a defeat to Spain ended their run. He stood out individually, scoring twice in a Round of 32 win over Senegal and reminding Europe of his knack for timing runs and striking cleanly from midfield.
Now, as United’s pre-season reaches its final stretch, he is trying to shift the focus back onto the pitch. The club face AC Milan in their final warm-up game, a chance for Tielemans to let his football drown out the noise that has followed his interview.
Villa reset after Super Cup disappointment
Back in Birmingham, Villa are dealing with their own early-season turbulence. Emery’s side fell 2–1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, a missed opportunity to add another piece of silverware to their resurgence.
The defeat does not alter the broader trajectory under Emery, but it does sharpen the edge going into the new league campaign. Villa open their Premier League season away to Brighton on 23 August, a tricky assignment for a team now expected to perform like a Champions League regular rather than a plucky outsider.
They will do so without a midfielder who had become part of the club’s recent identity, even if his exit has ended on a slightly sour note.
New season, new scrutiny
Manchester United, meanwhile, begin their Premier League campaign a day earlier, travelling to Hull City on 22 August. Tielemans will arrive there under the spotlight that always follows a major signing at Old Trafford, now amplified by the reaction from the fanbase he has just left behind.
He wanted a bigger stage. He has one.
