Zoma Mania in Nürnberg: Rising Star Attracts Big Transfers
A storm is gathering around 1. FC Nürnberg’s new superstar. And it could end in one of the biggest exits the 2. Bundesliga has seen in years.
Mohamed Ali Zoma, just 22, has turned a solid promotion contender into a transfer hotspot. According to Bild, the striker is on the radar of several clubs, with RC Lens and Paris FC among the French sides circling. Other interested parties are said to have already made their move.
Nürnberg, though, are in no mood to be pushed around.
A Hat-Trick and a Price Tag
Zoma’s timing could hardly be more explosive. Last weekend he tore Dynamo Dresden apart almost single-handedly, scoring all three goals in a 3-0 win and underlining why half of Europe suddenly wants his signature.
Sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou made the club’s stance crystal clear after the game.
“I don't want to start thinking about it at all, I want to keep the player. The others certainly know as well that he is not a cheap player,” he said, drawing a line in the sand.
Supervisory board chairman Peter Meier had already set the tone earlier, floating a minimum figure of €20 million as a starting point. For a club in the second tier, that is not a warning shot. It is a declaration.
A Seller’s Market in Franconia
Nürnberg can afford to be stubborn. The club is under no financial pressure to cash in, and recent history backs up their confidence at the negotiating table.
In the past few years, FCN have brought in serious money for their best young talents:
- Stefanos Tzimas for €26.5 million
- Can Uzun for €13 million
- Casper Jander for €12 million
- Nathaniel Brown for €11.75 million
Brown’s story did not end there. Thanks to a sell-on clause, his move to Bayern Munich this summer for around €50 million sent even more money flowing back to Nürnberg. Each deal has strengthened the club’s leverage for the next negotiation.
Now Zoma is next in line. And this time, the numbers could explode again.
Klose Wants His Striker to Stay
While the phones ring in the offices, Miroslav Klose has a different priority: goals, not bids.
The Nürnberg coach is clinging to the hope that his new star will not be lured away just as the season is taking shape.
“You know how quickly things can move in football, but I am not concerning myself with that at all. I know that he feels very comfortable here. I don't have the feeling that he wants to go anywhere,” Klose explained.
For a coach still building his own reputation on the touchline, Zoma is more than just a striker. He is the focal point of an attack that suddenly looks capable of carrying Nürnberg back towards the Bundesliga.
From Italian Third Tier to Transfer Gold
Zoma’s rise makes the situation even more remarkable. Only last year, Nürnberg plucked him from UC AlbinoLeffe in Italy’s third division. The transfer fee: around €1.5 million.
If the club now sell for anything close to the figures being discussed, the profit would be enormous – another masterstroke in a transfer strategy that has turned Franconian talent into big money.
Born in Merate, in the Lombardy region, and with roots in Ivory Coast, Zoma has carried that blend of Italian schooling and African flair straight into the 2. Bundesliga. On Saturday, he led the line again in the prestigious Franconian derby against Greuther Fürth, a stage that only amplifies his growing reputation.
Nürnberg have shown they know how to sell. The question this time is simple: do they dare cash in again, or is Zoma the one they finally keep to lead them back to where they believe they belong?
