Advancing to the Knockout Stage

The tournament has expanded to 48 teams, changing the knockout phase setup. Instead of starting with a round of 16, it begins with a round of 32. This includes the top two teams from each group (24 teams) plus the eight best third-place finishers across all groups.

How Tiebreakers Are Decided

If teams finish level on points within their group, a set of criteria is used to rank them:

  1. Points earned in matches between the tied teams.
  2. Goal difference in matches between those teams.
  3. Goals scored in those matches.

If these don’t break the tie, the next steps are:

  1. Overall goal difference in all group matches.
  2. Total goals scored in all group matches.
  3. Fair play conduct score, considering yellow and red cards.

If equality still persists, rankings rely on the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Ranking Third-Place Teams

The eight best third-place teams will be ranked based on:

  1. Total points in group matches.
  2. Goal difference across all group matches.
  3. Goals scored in all group matches.
  4. Fair play conduct score.

Ties here also fall back on the latest FIFA World Rankings to decide.
