Ainsley Maitland-Niles Returns to Premier League with Everton After Lyon Spell
Everton have secured Ainsley Maitland-Niles on a three-year deal, ending their search for a right-back. The former Arsenal player returns to English football after spending three seasons at Lyon in Ligue 1.
Defensive Reinforcement for Everton
The Merseyside club moved to strengthen their defense following the retirement of long-serving captain Seamus Coleman, who left after 17 years at the club. Initially, Everton considered Fulham's Kenny Tete but ultimately signed Maitland-Niles, a 29-year-old graduate of the Arsenal academy.
Official Announcement and Squad Update
Everton shared the news on X with the message: "We have completed the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles on a permanent transfer from Olympique Lyonnais for an undisclosed fee. Welcome to Everton, Ainsley!" This marks Maitland-Niles as Everton’s seventh summer signing, joining Merlin Rohl, Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George, Christian Norgaard, Brennan Johnson, and Jack Grealish, who has returned on loan.
Strong European Experience
Maitland-Niles, who developed through Arsenal's ranks and won the FA Cup with them as well as the UEFA Europa Conference League with Roma, had a notable spell in France. Since August 2023, he made 119 appearances for Lyon across all competitions, contributing 22 goals and assists. Last season, he started 28 league games. His ability to play both full-back and midfield will add valuable flexibility to manager David Moyes' lineup.
Upcoming Debut Against Manchester United
If registered in time, Maitland-Niles could feature in Everton's next Premier League match at home against Manchester United on Sunday at Hill Dickinson Stadium. This high-profile clash will test his readiness and provide a chance to earn a starting spot before the international break.
