Alejandro Balde's Barcelona Future in Question Amid Transfer Speculation
Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is sliding into dangerous territory, and the message from the club on opening night could not have been clearer.
Left out of the squad entirely for the first league game against Elche, the 20-year-old watched on as Hansi Flick’s new era began without him. For a player once billed as Barça’s next long-term left-back, the omission landed like a statement.
From cornerstone to question mark
Balde’s name has been circulating across Europe all summer. Aston Villa, SL Benfica and, more recently, Manchester United have all been linked with a move as his status at Barcelona weakens.
Inside the club, the feeling is that Flick has already made his call. The coach has not been convinced by Balde’s pre-season, and memories of an inconsistent last campaign still linger. When he did play, the performances fluctuated. When he didn’t, it was often because of injuries that broke his rhythm and stalled his development.
That combination has opened the door for a reshuffle. Barcelona now view Joao Cancelo as their first-choice option on the left, with another full-back lined up as short-term cover. Balde, once the future, suddenly looks like the expendable piece in a squad being reshaped with urgency.
Balde feels the squeeze
As speculation grows, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has added fuel to the fire with a key update on the player’s mood.
According to Romano, Balde feels he is being pushed towards the exit. From his perspective, the club are constantly trying to “settle” his future elsewhere rather than backing him to reclaim his place. He does not share that vision. Balde is happy in Barcelona, wants to stay and believes he can fight his way back into the team.
Flick, though, appears to see a different path. With results and instant impact at a premium, the new coach is leaning on experience and reliability, and Balde has not yet convinced him he can provide either on a weekly basis.
The result is a growing disconnect: a player determined to stay, a club and coach behaving as if his time is almost up.
United watch on as market heats up
While the tension builds at Barça, interested clubs are circling.
Manchester United are tracking the situation closely as they search for a new left-back. Balde’s age and ceiling make him an attractive target for a side trying to lower the age profile of their defence without sacrificing quality. He fits the brief: young, explosive, already tested at the highest level.
Aston Villa and SL Benfica remain in the conversation as well, knowing that a player of his profile rarely becomes available without a fight.
Barcelona, though, are not planning a cut-price sale. The Catalan club value Balde at a minimum of €40 million and are prepared to hold that line. For them, it is either a significant fee or a player who stays and has to be reintegrated into a squad where his status has already been publicly downgraded.
The clock is ticking on the summer window. Balde wants to stay and prove himself. Flick has moved on without him. Somewhere between those two positions, a decision is coming – and it could define the next phase of a career that once looked destined to belong at Camp Nou.
