With stars like two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas and England goalkeeper icon Mary Earps joining the ranks, this squad has attracted significant attention ahead of the new season.
Rapid Transformation Since Promotion
Only 16 months ago, London City Lionesses secured promotion to the WSL after a crucial point earned against Birmingham City. Now, just eight players remain from that squad, illustrating how much the team has evolved. Challenges Beyond the Pitch: Champions League Eligibility
An important issue looms should London City secure a top-three finish in the WSL. Club owner Michele Kang also owns European powerhouse Lyon, raising questions under UEFA rules that forbid an individual or entity from controlling multiple clubs in the same continental competition.
With Lyon almost certain to feature in the 2027-28 Women’s Champions League, it remains unclear whether London City would be allowed entry if they qualify. UEFA’s head of women’s football, Nadine Kessler, confirmed that no exceptions will be made to preserve the competition’s integrity.
When asked about this, Maestre deferred, saying such decisions are beyond his control.

Despite the external hype, players and staff remain focused on performance. Kennedy emphasized the importance of understanding tactical details and fostering good relationships on and off the field. She aims for a strong start to build momentum.
Putellas, often viewed as the crown jewel of the summer signings, prefers to avoid setting expectations. She stressed commitment to hard work and letting results speak game by game.
