Alisson Becker Fined £8,000 for Misconduct After Nottingham Forest Match
Alisson Becker has been fined £8,000 by the FA after accepting a misconduct charge for his actions following Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest last month.
The Liverpool goalkeeper lost his composure at the City Ground after being penalised for a late challenge on former team-mate Neco Williams, a decision that allowed Morgan Gibbs-White to put Forest 2-1 up from the spot. The incident came in a chaotic spell that also saw Liverpool frustrated by a malfunctioning fourth official’s board, which delayed a triple substitution in the build-up to the penalty.
Forest were eventually pegged back by a late Victor Munoz equaliser, but the final whistle did nothing to cool Alisson’s anger. As he left the pitch, the Brazilian was seen kicking the fourth official’s electronic board in the tunnel area, an outburst that has now brought formal punishment.
In a statement, the FA confirmed: “Liverpool’s Alisson Becker has been fined £8,000 for misconduct at the Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on 29 August.
“It was alleged that the goalkeeper acted in an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle.
“Alisson Becker has subsequently accepted the charge against him and received the standard penalty.”
The sting deepened for the 31-year-old this week when the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel ruled that the spot-kick should not have been awarded in the first place.
Of the five-person panel, three members felt Alisson’s challenge on Williams did not meet the threshold for a foul. Their assessment stated: “The contact from Alisson was inevitable as a consequence of his momentum in attempting to save the ball. The contact made was not reckless and below the threshold for a penalty.”
Even so, the panel unanimously backed VAR Michael Oliver’s decision not to send referee Sam Barrott to the pitchside monitor, arguing that the on-field call did not constitute a “clear and obvious error” and therefore did not justify intervention.
So the verdict is split in two: the penalty deemed soft, the VAR process upheld, and Alisson left counting the cost of a flash of fury on a night when the technology, the referee and now the disciplinary system all combined to go against him.
