Alpha Cisse's Impact on Milan's Season and Italy's U21 Future

Alpha Cisse has lit up Milan’s season in flashes, but his leap to the senior Italy side will have to wait.

The 19-year-old has made a habit of announcing himself on the big stage, and he seems to like doing it in Turin. His first goal for Milan arrived against Torino, the opening strike of the campaign. Then came Juventus. Same city, same type of finish, same cold-blooded impact off the bench.

Two goals, both away, both in pressure environments. Enough, many thought, to push him straight into Roberto Mancini’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

According to MilanNews, Mancini is tracking Cisse closely. Technical director Claudio Ranieri is doing the same, intent on watching his development over a longer stretch rather than off a small burst of form. The interest is real, the radar is locked on, but the timing is cautious.

For this international window, the door to the senior Azzurri remains closed. Cisse will instead report to the Italy U21s, where he has already made two appearances. He is expected to feature as they face Poland and Armenia during the break, another test in a shirt he is quickly growing into.

The decision feels like one of those sliding-door moments. A senior call-up now would have carried weight: a signal that Italy are ready to accelerate change, to move away from old patterns and reward fearless young form. It could easily have happened. On merit, the argument was there.

It hasn’t come. Not this time. And for those eager to see a bolder, more ruthless renewal of the national team, the choice leaves a sting.
