Alvarez weighs Arsenal switch amid Atletico's hefty demands
Julian Alvarez’s future has reached decision day, and the clock is ticking loudly in both Madrid and north London.
According to Spanish journalist Pedro Morata, the Atletico Madrid forward is expected to decide today whether to open full negotiations with Arsenal or stay put in the Spanish capital. Until recently, that choice would have been simple. Alvarez had made it clear he only wanted Barcelona. Anywhere else was a non‑starter.
That stance has cracked.
Morata reports that Alvarez is now genuinely considering Arsenal, even though he still has “many doubts” and does not want to return to England. The situation is described as finely poised: 55 per cent in favour of remaining at Atletico, 45 per cent towards a move to the Premier League. For a player who previously vetoed every destination but Catalonia, that is a major shift.
Arsenal’s bid on the table, Atletico push back
Arsenal have already made their move. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Atletico director of football Mateu Alemany flew to London recently for face‑to‑face talks with the club’s hierarchy. Out of those meetings came an opening proposal: £103 million plus £4m in add‑ons.
Atletico’s response was blunt. They want around £129m.
It is a figure that jars with the club’s own public messaging. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has repeatedly insisted Atletico would not even consider offers of €150m or €200m for Alvarez, presenting him as essentially untouchable. Now, behind closed doors, there is at least a willingness to talk to Arsenal.
There is a reason. Atletico are keen on Viktor Gyokeres as a replacement and know they will need serious money to make that happen. Even so, the gulf between Arsenal’s first bid and Atletico’s demands remains huge, and the London club must decide quickly whether to edge closer to that asking price or walk away.
Sour mood in Madrid
While the numbers are being traded in boardrooms, the mood in the stands has turned.
Alvarez was left out of Atletico’s opening La Liga fixture, a 2-0 home win over Malaga, and the decision triggered an angry reaction. Hostile chants rang out from sections of the home support, frustration spilling over as the prospect of losing a key forward became very real.
Diego Simeone publicly framed the omission as a fitness call.
“We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be,” the Atletico coach explained.
On paper, it was a standard manager’s line about conditioning. In the context of a looming transfer deadline and a player wrestling with his future, it only fuelled the sense that something is about to give.
Arsenal’s moment of truth
The timeline is brutal. The window closes soon, Atletico want clarity, and Alvarez is expected to communicate his final decision today.
If he chooses Arsenal, the spotlight swings instantly onto the negotiations between the clubs: will the Gunners stretch towards that £129m figure, or try to force Atletico down from a position they have publicly framed as immovable?
If he stays, Arsenal’s recruitment team must pivot fast. Mikel Arteta will need alternative attacking solutions at speed, with little room left for drawn‑out talks or second guesses.
Alvarez’s answer will shape two transfer strategies in one stroke. Now it comes down to whether he is ready to leave Madrid – and whether Arsenal are willing to pay the price to bring him back to England.
