Álvarez Rejects Man City Return Amid Barcelona Desire
Julián Álvarez has told Manchester City, in no uncertain terms, that the Etihad chapter of his career is closed.
According to Cadena SER, City contacted Atlético Madrid to explore bringing their former striker back, only to be met with a firm message before talks could even begin: Álvarez has no intention of returning to Manchester. No bid, no negotiation. Just a flat refusal.
A saga with three giants and one immovable stance
The 26-year-old is at the centre of the most combustible transfer saga of the summer. Locked in a standoff with Atlético and courted aggressively from England, he has made his position brutally clear.
Arsenal see him as their priority signing, the centre-forward to reshape Mikel Arteta’s attack. They have pushed, and pushed again. Each time, Álvarez has turned them down.
He doesn’t want London. He doesn’t want Manchester. He wants Barcelona.
That desire has been no secret. Barça already tested Atlético’s resolve earlier in the window with a €100 million (£86m) offer, which was rejected. This week, club president Joan Laporta went public, openly acknowledging both their interest and Álvarez’s own wish to wear the Blaugrana shirt, calling it “common knowledge” that the Argentine wants the move.
Atlético’s hard line
Barcelona may want him. Álvarez may want Barcelona even more. But Atlético’s answer has been blunt.
The Madrid club have reiterated their refusal to strengthen a direct domestic rival, briefing that there is a “zero per cent chance” they will sell their star striker to Barça. Not low. Not unlikely. Zero.
That stance leaves Álvarez boxed in. The forward is determined to stay in Spain, yet the only door that keeps opening for him leads back to England — a route he simply will not take.
Personal reasons, not footballing ones
This isn’t about the Premier League, the weather, or the footballing project. Reports indicate Álvarez’s reluctance to return to England stems from personal circumstances.
He is said to be acutely aware of UK visa regulations that would make it difficult for his family to visit regularly. In Spain, those obstacles disappear. For a player in his prime, settled on and off the pitch, that distinction matters.
It also underlines how much has changed since his first spell in England.
Álvarez arrived at City from River Plate in January 2022 for £14m, a sharp piece of business that quickly paid off. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances, played a key role in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble, and looked every inch a long-term pillar of the squad.
Two summers ago, City sanctioned his £82m move to Atlético. Now, when the Premier League champions have circled back, they find a very different response.
Trapped between principle and reality
Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that Arsenal represent his only realistic escape route from Madrid this summer. No other club can currently match Atlético’s demands and offer him a leading role.
Still, he holds his line. He wants to remain in Spain, and he wants Barcelona. Atlético will not sell to Barcelona. City and Arsenal wait with open arms in England. He will not go.
The result is a stalemate that suits almost nobody.
City have been rebuffed. Barça are shut out. Arsenal are frozen on the sidelines, knowing they are his only viable exit and yet not his choice. Atlético, for all their power in this negotiation, must deal with a centre-forward whose ideal move has been blocked by his own employers.
What next for Álvarez?
Unless something gives, Álvarez faces a brutally simple decision in the final stretch of the window: repair the relationship with Atlético and commit to another season in Madrid, or cling to the hope that a late twist opens the door to Barcelona after all.
Right now, the player who once seemed able to go anywhere finds himself with nowhere he truly wants to go.
