Andros Townsend has survived Stoke away and the Bernabeu. On Saturday night in Thailand, he was flattened by a pitch roller.

The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was caught up in a bizarre pre-match incident at Pattani that looked more like a blooper reel than a warm-up drill.

Townsend, 35, was going through his pre-game routine when a member of the Pattani staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller. The machine trundled straight into the ex-Tottenham and Crystal Palace man, knocking him off his feet. His left leg was briefly trapped under the vehicle before staff rushed in.

Somehow, he got up. And he played.

Despite the scare, the 13-cap England international came off the bench later in the game as Prachuap ran out 3-0 winners, turning what could have been a horror story into another strange chapter in a career that has already taken him from the Premier League to provincial Thailand.

Townsend has never been shy on social media, and he wasted no time turning the chaos into content. Earlier this year he had posted about swapping the cold, windswept away days of English football for sun-soaked trips in Thailand, jokingly contrasting his new life with those grim afternoons at Stoke’s bet365 Stadium.

This time, he went back to that theme. On his Instagram story he wrote: “It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why.”

The clip of the collision rocketed around social platforms, quickly becoming one of the most surreal moments of the Thai season. One post even dubbed him “The King of Memes in Thai League history.” Townsend leaned into the joke again, replying: “trust me” followed by four laughing emojis.

He has been a regular face on ITV as a pundit. Now, halfway across the world, he has found a new audience – not with a goal or a screamer from 30 yards, but by getting run over by the groundsman’s roller and walking away with a win and a punchline.
