Andy Townsend advises Cole Palmer to leave Chelsea and rediscover his game

Andy Townsend urges Cole Palmer to quit Chelsea to “rediscover his game” as uncertainty grows around the forward’s future at Stamford Bridge.

The former Chelsea midfielder believes the England international, once the beating heart of the Blues’ attack, now looks a shadow of the player who lit up his debut campaign in west London. Rumours are already circling that Manchester United could test Chelsea’s resolve, and Townsend can see why a move might appeal.

Palmer’s numbers since arriving have been remarkable. In his first season, he racked up 42 goal involvements, then followed that with another 18 goals last term, driving Chelsea back into the Champions League and helping deliver the Club World Cup and Conference League. He has hit double figures again this season, proof that the end product hasn’t completely dried up.

But the spark has. Or at least, that’s the concern.

Townsend, speaking to BetVictor, painted the picture of a player searching for something that no longer seems to be there at Chelsea.

“First and foremost, Cole Palmer needs to rediscover his game. The difference between where he was a year ago and where he is now is significant,” he said, before questioning the environment around the 22‑year‑old. In Townsend’s view, Palmer is looking around the dressing room and asking who is driving standards, who is truly ready to “fight alongside” him.

The answer, in his eyes, is: not many.

Townsend highlighted Joao Pedro as a “genuine talent”, recalling a standout display at Villa Park earlier in the season that he described as one of the best centre-forward performances he has seen this year. That, he suggested, is the level of inspiration Palmer needs around him.

Instead, the narrative at Chelsea feels different. Enzo Fernandez, Townsend noted, appears to be “already laying the groundwork for a departure” with his recent comments and body language, a symbol of a club in constant flux rather than steady ascent.

This is where the warning lands hardest. At a club where players arrive in waves and leave just as quickly, where promising youngsters are sold to balance the books, Townsend believes it is easy for someone like Palmer to feel he might be next.

“If you continually see better players arriving and then departing, or the finest young talents being sold for profit, it can lead to frustration over time,” he said. For a player who should be entering the defining years of his career, that frustration can quickly turn into a decision.

Townsend would not be shocked if Palmer eventually concludes that he must go elsewhere to reclaim the version of himself that tore through defences a year ago. The suggestion is clear: unless Chelsea stabilise and start matching his ambition, the club risks losing one of its few genuine match-winners.

All this unfolds with Chelsea stuck in ninth place in the Premier League, preparing to face reigning champions Liverpool. It is the kind of fixture that once showcased the club’s swagger and certainty.

Now it may instead offer another glimpse into whether Cole Palmer still sees his future at Stamford Bridge, or whether this is the season that pushes him towards the exit door.
