Antonio Conte is back in the Manchester United conversation – and this time the noise from Italy is getting harder to ignore.
Reports there claim the six-time league winner has already made up his mind about a potential move to Old Trafford, with il Corriere dello Sport painting a picture of a coach “waiting by the phone” for United’s call. Out of work since leaving Napoli at the end of last season, Conte is being pushed once again towards the Premier League’s most scrutinised dugout.
Carrick’s rise – and the first cracks
The idea would have sounded absurd a few months ago. Michael Carrick stepped in after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and immediately changed the mood around Old Trafford. A drifting, underperforming side was reshaped into a team that not only surged into the Champions League places but wrapped up third in the Premier League with something to spare.
INEOS, newly embedded as co-owners, did not hesitate. They backed Carrick, did their homework on alternatives, then handed the 44-year-old an initial two-year deal. It looked like a clean, modern reset: a young coach, a clear structure, and a board publicly aligned behind him.
Yet the Premier League rarely grants anyone a honeymoon. A flat start to the new campaign, just four points from the first four league games, has sharpened the debate. One former United player has already questioned whether Carrick will even make it to the January window if the current form continues.
That uncertainty has opened the door to a familiar name.
Conte on alert – and in demand
In Italy, they have already taken the story a step further. Tuesday’s reports suggested United’s hierarchy were actively weighing up an approach for Conte. The follow-up from il Corriere dello Sport dialled up the pressure again: Conte, they say, is ready, keen to jump back in, but determined to wait for the right project.
He has already said no to a return with the Italian national team. He has also turned down Fenerbahce. The message is clear: Conte is not scrambling for work; he is holding out for a club that matches his ambitions and his demands.
Old Trafford fits that profile. It is not the first time his name has been linked to the Red Devils, and the appeal of rebuilding a fallen giant is obvious. Yet United are not alone in the chase. Juventus are also considering a move to bring Conte back to the Allianz Stadium, a twist that only intensifies the pressure on United’s decision-makers.
For any club, his record speaks loudly. Across 703 games in management, Conte has delivered a win percentage of 58.04%. He brings structure, intensity, and a history of turning talented but inconsistent squads into title contenders. For a club still trying to rediscover its identity, that kind of certainty is tempting.
United’s stance: Carrick backed, for now
Inside Old Trafford, though, the message remains consistent: Carrick is not on the brink. Despite the poor early results and the frustration of a 1-0 home defeat to 10-man Manchester City, United’s hierarchy are not entertaining the idea of sacking him just months after making his appointment permanent.
They accept this was always going to be a bumpy start. A major midfield overhaul in the summer demanded patience. New signings need time to settle, combinations need time to form, and the club knew that when they sanctioned the changes.
Transfer frustrations have also coloured the mood. As Fabrizio Romano explained after the loss to City, United wanted one more key addition – a left-back – but refused to compromise on quality.
“Manchester United absolutely know that maybe the point about the summer transfer window was to add one more player, a left-back. They tried. It was not possible to proceed with the right options,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “United didn’t want to sign just to say: ‘OK, we signed one.’ They wanted to be convinced about the player they were going to sign, and so that’s why nothing happened.”
The club, Romano insists, “absolutely remain convinced that the future will be bright under Michael Carrick” despite the meagre points return. Inside Carrick’s camp, the conviction is just as strong.
Carrick’s belief vs Conte’s shadow
“Carrick remains absolutely convinced that this team can do very well in the next weeks and months, especially after the break,” Romano added.
That faith will be tested. Every dropped point, every laboured performance, will now be viewed through the lens of Conte’s availability. A proven serial winner, free and waiting, with Juventus lurking in the background. It is the kind of scenario that can shift boardroom thinking quickly if results do not turn.
For now, United insist there are “absolutely no considerations” about removing Carrick. They are backing their man, backing their project, and backing the idea that early turbulence does not demand another reset.
But Conte is out there, restless, ready, and watching. How long can United ignore that presence if the table refuses to move in their favour?
