Arsenal's Pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes: Newcastle's Firm Stance
Arsenal have made their first serious move for Bruno Guimaraes – and been swiftly rebuffed.
The Premier League champions, long-time admirers of the Brazilian, sounded out both the player’s camp and Newcastle United over a deal believed to be worth around £55 million. It was an opening gambit, an “exploratory approach” as described by Ben Jacobs, but it drew a firm response from Tyneside.
Newcastle’s message was blunt: not at that price.
Arsenal push on long-term target
Interest from north London in Guimaraes is not new. Arteta has tracked the 26‑year‑old for several windows, viewing him as the sort of all‑action midfielder who can both knit Arsenal’s play and add bite in the centre of the pitch.
This summer, the need feels sharper. Arsenal want a central midfielder and a left‑sided attacker, and Guimaraes sits at the top of the list for the former. Their move comes at a delicate moment for Newcastle, who missed out on European football and now face intense speculation around several key players.
Jacobs revealed that Arsenal had already spoken to Guimaraes’ representatives, mirroring an earlier enquiry from Manchester United before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no formal contact with Newcastle, who, as Jacobs stressed, “do not wish to sell”.
That stance has now been tested.
Newcastle “close the doors”
Fabrizio Romano backed up the reports on Thursday, confirming that Arsenal followed up their talks with the player’s camp by approaching Newcastle directly.
“It’s true that Arsenal made an approach for Bruno Guimaraes,” Romano said on his YouTube channel, outlining a direct line of communication between club and player, and club to club. Arsenal’s intention, he explained, was to explore a deal in the region of £55m.
Newcastle’s answer was decisive. The Magpies, according to Romano, “closed the doors” to any sale at that figure.
From Brazil, outlet GeGlobo went further, describing Arsenal’s proposal as a £55m “offer rejected” by Newcastle but adding that the Gunners “will make a new bid”. The player, for now, is said to be leaving the situation entirely in Newcastle’s hands and respecting the club’s position.
So the first shot has been fired. It has not landed. The question now is how far Arsenal are prepared to go for a midfielder they clearly regard as transformative.
Monga chase gathers pace
While Newcastle hold firm over their star man, Arsenal are pushing ahead on another front.
Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has also been in their sights, and the champions have already seen an initial, opportunistic bid knocked back. The opening offer was described as “cheeky” – a classic lowball to test Leicester’s appetite for negotiation.
This time, though, there is growing optimism in north London.
Football Insider reports that Arsenal are “confident of finalising a deal” for Monga this summer, with both clubs in talks and keen to avoid the complication of a tribunal. Crucially for Arsenal, the player is understood to be willing to make the move, a significant factor when fees and structures start to get thrashed out.
A window that could define Arsenal’s next step
One deal looks like a battle of financial muscle and resolve. The other, a more traditional piece of elite-club talent poaching.
Arsenal know Guimaraes will not come cheap. Newcastle have drawn a clear line at £55m, and any second bid would need to reflect both his importance to Eddie Howe’s side and the broader market for top-tier midfielders.
Monga, by contrast, represents the future: a young prospect, a development project, a player Arsenal hope to shape rather than one they expect to build around immediately.
Two very different targets, one clear theme. Arsenal are acting like champions determined not to stand still. The only unknown now is how high they are willing to climb to prise Bruno Guimaraes out of St James’ Park.
