Arsenal's Christos Tzolis Shines on Premier League Debut

Arsenal may still be scouring the market for another forward before the window shuts on September 1, but Jamie Carragher is convinced the answer to their left‑side dilemma is already in the building.

The former Liverpool defender reserved special praise for new signing Christos Tzolis after the Greek winger lit up Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry City, supplying an assist for Bukayo Saka and tormenting defenders all night on his Premier League debut.

“Tzolis has been excellent on his Premier League debut. What a left winger Arsenal have got,” Carragher told Sky Sports, his verdict cutting through the noise around Arsenal’s transfer plans.

Tzolis grabs his chance

Tzolis arrived this summer in a £34m deal from Club Brugge, billed by many as the natural successor to Leandro Trossard on that left flank. Trossard departed for Besiktas after playing a key role in delivering Arsenal’s first league title in over 20 years, leaving a sizeable creative void.

If there were doubts about whether the 22-year-old could step into that space, he has attacked them with the same directness he shows with the ball at his feet. He impressed throughout pre-season and made a statement in the Community Shield win over Manchester City, showing he had no intention of being a squad player tucked away on the bench.

Coventry felt the full force of that confidence. Tzolis drove at full-backs, combined sharply with Saka and the Arsenal midfield, and brought an urgency that has already caught the eye of the dressing room and the dugout.

Arteta’s endorsement

Mikel Arteta did not hold back when asked about his new winger after the win over the Sky Blues.

“I love that a player that has been with us just for a few weeks gets this kind of energy every time he's on the ball. I think he's earned it,” the Arsenal manager said.

“I think the way he has performed in the last few games has been phenomenal. What he transmits as a player is so direct, so incisive, constantly. He wants to make things happen, and he has done an incredible variety of actions in the last 30 metres.

“I think it's up to him to make the right decisions. Even the spaces are sometimes really, really small. I'm very happy with him.

“It was great because the start is always tricky; we played a team that had a long time to prepare as well, and they are really good at what they do, but I've been really impressed with what I have seen so far.”

Those are not the words of a manager treating Tzolis as a stopgap. They sound like the foundations of a key role in a title defence.

Transfer hunt meets reality check

Arsenal’s recruitment team has not slowed down. The club have been exploring options for another left winger, with an audacious move for Vinicius Junior discussed before the Brazilian committed his future to Real Madrid with a new contract at the Bernabeu.

The search for extra firepower in the final third has seen names like Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Kenan Yildiz linked with the Emirates. All three would command huge fees, the kind of cheques that shape a club’s planning for years.

Yet as the rumours swirl, Tzolis is quietly shifting the conversation on the pitch. Carragher’s view is simple: Arsenal might already have the solution to the lack of goals and assists from that side of the attack, without needing to smash another transfer record.

With the window ticking down and the champions aiming to retain their Premier League crown and push deeper into the Champions League, the question now is stark: do Arsenal chase another marquee winger, or double down on the fearless, £34m Greek who is already playing as if the position is his?
