Arsenal's European Mission: Arteta Ready to Rotate in Naples

Arsenal head back into Europe with a scar and a mission.

Last season they were flawless through the league phase, eight wins from eight, untouchable over 90 minutes across the entire competition. Only the lottery of penalties in Budapest stopped them, Paris Saint-Germain edging the shootout and snatching the trophy from their grasp.

Now the road starts again, in Naples on Wednesday night, and Mikel Arteta looks ready to lean on the depth that carried them so far.

Arteta ready to rotate in Naples

With a demanding schedule and a stacked squad, Arsenal are expected to look different from the side that beat Chelsea on Sunday. Arteta has options everywhere; this is the kind of night he built this group for.

In midfield, Bruno Guimaraes did not play a single minute against Chelsea as he nursed a knock. That opens the door for Martin Zubimendi, whose control and composure make him an obvious candidate to step in at the base of midfield.

Higher up the pitch, there is a sense of opportunity. Eberechi Eze will be eyeing that left flank, hoping this is the moment he gets a run from the start in Europe. Through the middle, Viktor Gyokeres is pushing for his first start of the season. If Arteta decides to carefully manage Kai Havertz’s workload, the powerful Swede is the natural alternative to lead the line.

Defensive puzzle at the back

At the back, injuries continue to shape the picture.

William Saliba remains out with a long-term back problem, a major absence that Arsenal have had to learn to live with. Jurrien Timber, still yet to play a minute this season, is edging closer to a return but is not ready to be thrown straight into a European tie of this intensity. Cristhian Mosquera is a doubt with a muscle issue, another complication in an already stretched area.

All of that points to Ezri Konsa partnering Gabriel again in central defence, just as he did in the win over Chelsea. That pairing looked assured at the weekend and is likely to be trusted once more.

If Arteta tweaks anything, it is expected to be at left-back. Riccardo Calafiori has been outstanding in the early weeks of the campaign, aggressive on the front foot and calm in possession, but his Arsenal career has already been punctured by injuries. With a long season ahead, the medical and coaching staff are unlikely to gamble with his minutes so early.

Piero Hincapie, the only defender named on the bench against Chelsea, stands ready. Given the context, there is every chance he steps into the starting XI in Naples.

Arsenal arrive in Italy with fresh memories of heartbreak and a squad built to go one step further. Now they have to prove that depth can deliver when the stakes rise again.
