Arsenal's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez Amid Barcelona Interest

Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even if the player’s heart is set on Barcelona.

The Premier League champions have pushed all summer to bring the Atlético Madrid forward back to England, with FourFourTwo reporting that Álvarez’s preference remains a move to La Liga and the Camp Nou. Barcelona is the dream. Arsenal, for now, are the reality knocking loudest.

England calling – and Atlético pushing

In Spain, the story sounds different. Sport report that “Julián Álvarez’s future will be decided in the coming hours, and all signs point to England,” adding that Atlético are actively “pushing” the 26-year-old towards north London rather than a rival destination.

This is not the move Álvarez imagined when he publicly opened the door earlier in the window. “The best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” he said in the summer, after Real Madrid reportedly saw a £129 million bid rejected by Atlético.

That dream, though, wears Blaugrana. Barcelona remain his preferred option, despite Arsenal’s persistence and the growing sense in Spain that the tide is turning towards the Emirates.

Arteta on the phone, Arsenal on the table

Mikel Arteta has not left this one to intermediaries. The Arsenal manager has phoned Álvarez personally, outlining the role he could play in a side that has just reclaimed the Premier League title. The message is clear: come to London, be central to the project, don’t wait forever for Barcelona.

So far, the response has been cool. The former Manchester City forward “only has eyes for Barcelona,” according to reports, even as his current club lean towards cashing in and sending him back to England.

There is another twist. Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in London, primarily to discuss a deal for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. Sport Witness note that Álvarez’s name is also expected to be on the agenda, with Arsenal’s interest and Atlético’s willingness to sell intersecting neatly in the capital.

A complex attacking puzzle

Arsenal’s role in this saga stretches beyond Álvarez. The London club are threaded through several of Barcelona’s attacking options.

Viktor Gyökeres is now being linked with Barça. Gabriel Jesus is also on their shortlist. Both names matter to Arsenal’s planning, and both complicate the picture around Álvarez. If one of those forwards moves, the dominoes could fall in several directions.

Inside London Colney, Arteta is said to be braced for all outcomes. FourFourTwo understands he is prepared for the possibility that no new forward arrives at all this summer, even with the club sounding out options across Europe.

Gabriel Martinelli, for instance, has reportedly turned down an offer from Galatasaray. There is also said to be interest from Arsenal in Victor Osimhen, another heavyweight name who would radically reshape their attack if a deal ever materialised.

Not every chase has ended well. The Gunners are not involved in the Bradley Barcola pursuit, while moves for Vinícius Jr and Morgan Rogers have collapsed: Vinícius extended his deal in Madrid, Rogers chose Chelsea in a British-record transfer.

The offer on the table

Arsenal’s proposal for Álvarez is substantial. Sport Witness, relaying the Sport report from Spain, state that the offer stands at “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres,” with the Argentine told he could double his salary at the Emirates and take on a key role under Arteta.

That role is flexible, and that’s part of the attraction. Álvarez could slot in on the left, effectively becoming a high-end alternative – or eventual successor – to Martinelli. He could also operate through the middle, challenging Kai Havertz as the central forward and giving Arsenal a different profile in big games.

Everything now hinges on one thing: does Álvarez cling to the Barcelona dream, or accept the project that actually wants – and can afford – him right now?

The hours ahead will test just how strong that dream really is.
