Arsenal Secures Leicester Prodigy Jeremy Monga Over United
Arsenal have landed a major blow to Manchester United’s long-term planning, with Leicester City teenager Jeremy Monga reportedly choosing north London over Old Trafford.
The 16-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young English talents, has turned down United, Manchester City and Chelsea to set his sights on Arsenal. The Gunners are expected to pay between £10m and £15m for a player still years away from senior football, a fee that underlines how fiercely Europe’s elite are now fighting for the next generation.
For United, it is another reminder of the shifting landscape. While Arsenal secure a potential star of tomorrow, Old Trafford is locked in a frantic battle to fix the present.
Butt, Neville, Saha: Legends Demand a New United
The noise around United’s recruitment is getting louder, and it is coming from their own former players.
Nicky Butt has made it clear he wants his old club to go after West Ham United midfielder Crysencio Summerville. The 24-year-old has impressed at the World Cup for the Netherlands, and Butt believes he fits the profile of the rebuild.
"He's an explosive player, he's good to watch, but I don't think he's consistent enough," Butt admitted, speaking via the Mirror. That didn’t put him off the idea. "The money shouldn't be a lot to get him, and United have to build a squad. It can't be all about going and getting the superstar signings."
Summerville, he argued, has already shown he can step up on the biggest stage. "Summerville was brilliant for the Netherlands in the first game, so he could potentially start every week for Man United."
Butt’s message is blunt: United’s bench is nowhere near good enough.
"We've got to build the squad, the bench has got to be stronger," he added. He pointed back to the defeat against Leeds at Old Trafford last season as a warning sign. When injuries hit, United’s depth collapsed. For Butt, players like Summerville are exactly the type of additions that can prevent a repeat.
Gary Neville, meanwhile, has cast his eye over Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha. With headline targets such as Sandro Tonali or Mateus Fernandes carrying huge price tags, Neville sees value elsewhere.
"The more he [Nmecha] plays like he did the other night the more expensive he'll get," Neville said. United, he noted, are being quoted around £100m for “the West Ham boy Fernandes” and simply cannot afford to ignore emerging options across Europe. Nmecha, he argued, "looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything."
Louis Saha has gone a step further, openly calling on United to crash Liverpool’s plans.
Saha Tells United: Hijack Liverpool’s Diomande Move
Yan Diomande is fast becoming one of the most talked-about young forwards in Europe. The RB Leipzig winger has shone for Ivory Coast at the World Cup and attracted serious interest from Liverpool and PSG.
Liverpool are prepared to commit to a package worth up to £86m, while Leipzig are pushing for a new contract. Saha does not want to see his former club sit back and watch.
"Man United should definitely hijack Liverpool’s interest in Yan Diomande," he told the Metro, and later reiterated to Casinolyze.co.uk. For Saha, Diomande represents the modern winger: direct, fearless, physically strong.
"When you have that confidence and simplicity in your game, to dribble, pass, be physical, and be courageous, I love that," Saha said. "Those styles are amazing."
He pointed to Diomande’s journey, from a difficult start in the United States to stardom in Europe, as proof of his mentality. After a strong opening World Cup performance and an impressive year with Leipzig, Saha believes the 19-year-old can reach the level of Lamine Yamal.
United, though, are still only circling. Liverpool have made their intentions clear. The longer that continues, the more likely Diomande becomes another missed opportunity.
Casemiro, Beckham and MLS’ ‘Discovery’ Twist
Away from Europe, one of United’s recent marquee signings is edging towards a very different chapter.
Casemiro looks set to join Inter Miami as a free agent, linking up with David Beckham’s MLS project. Yet even as a free transfer, he may cost Beckham close to £750,000 because of MLS’ “discovery clause.”
In simple terms, LA Galaxy are understood to have filed discovery rights on Casemiro. Despite his glittering career at Porto, Real Madrid and Manchester United, Galaxy are classed as the club that “discovered” him within MLS rules. That status means Inter Miami could be forced to pay them close to £1m simply for the right to sign him.
A free transfer, but not quite.
Ederson: “Practically Done” for Old Trafford
Back in Manchester, one deal is all but over the line.
Brazilian midfielder Ederson did not feature in his country’s 3-0 win over Haiti, but after the game he made time to speak to Tuttosport. There, he left little room for doubt.
He described his move to Old Trafford as "practically done", stressing that he wanted to make the most of this moment in his career. The only things missing now are the official announcement and the customary photograph with the shirt.
United are understood to be paying £38.8m to Atalanta for the 24-year-old, a fee that reflects both his rise in Serie A and the urgency of United’s midfield rebuild.
Tonali, Fernandes and a Midfield Arms Race
The market around United is moving quickly.
Newcastle United have already turned down an offer of around £80m from Tottenham for Sandro Tonali. The Italian only arrived on Tyneside in 2023, but Newcastle are open to selling for the right price. That price is believed to be £100m.
United have been linked with Tonali, but at those figures they are being forced to look at alternatives.
One of those is West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes. Late on Saturday, reports in Italy suggested Spurs were "very close" to agreeing personal terms with the 21-year-old. The player is interested in a move to north London, yet talks between Tottenham and West Ham have not started.
That gives United a window. Fabrizio Romano reports that United are still pushing hard in discussions with both Fernandes’ representatives and West Ham as they chase a breakthrough. The battle for his signature is underway, and it already has the feel of a defining tug-of-war for the summer.
Free Agents, Teenagers and the Long Game
United’s recruitment puzzle stretches far beyond the next headline name.
At Anderlecht, 17-year-old Nathan De Cat has entered the final year of his contract, triggering interest from both United and Tottenham. His deal will move into its last 12 months at the end of the month, a situation that gives any buyer leverage.
If Michael Carrick’s side decide to move, United could use that contract pressure to drive the price down. For a club trying to stretch a budget across multiple positions, those marginal gains matter.
Then there is the free-agent market. United have been repeatedly linked in the past with Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka and former AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie. Both were expensive targets at their peak; both are now expected to be available for nothing this summer.
Goretzka, 31, is set to leave Bayern as a free agent after the World Cup. Kessie, 29, is also poised to depart Al-Ahli on a free. Between them, they offer Champions League experience, physical presence and years still left at the top level.
They are not glamorous, long-term project signings. They are proven, plug-and-play midfielders. Exactly the sort of options that test how ruthless United want to be in reshaping their squad.
Arsenal Strike Early, United Chase Answers
As Arsenal close in on Jeremy Monga, they underline a clear strategy: pay big for the future, secure the best teenagers before they explode, and build a pathway that convinces them to choose north London over anywhere else.
United, by contrast, stand at a crossroads. Club legends are calling for smart, aggressive recruitment. Targets are slipping into tug-of-wars with rivals. The bench is under scrutiny. The midfield is being rebuilt on the fly.
The market is moving fast. The question now is whether Old Trafford can move faster.
