Arsenal Sign Jamie Scanlon from Manchester United
Arsenal are set to prise highly rated teenager Jamie Scanlon away from Manchester United as part of their aggressive rebuild at Under-21 level.
The 19-year-old winger, on United’s books since 2021, is expected to join the Gunners on a free transfer, with a sizeable 40 per cent sell-on clause written into the deal. He has already completed his medical, and the move is due to be finalised within the next 48 hours.
This is not a signing for the loan carousel. Arsenal have no immediate plans to send Scanlon out. He will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: he is coming to London to force his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can.
Scanlon arrives with something many academy wingers can only dream of at his age — proper senior international experience. He has already been capped 24 times by Gibraltar, exposure that has sharpened his game and drawn attention from across the continent, particularly in Spain.
Sevilla pushed hard to land him permanently in January. United resisted and instead shipped him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of last season. Arsenal have now moved into that space, helped by a couple of familiar voices.
New Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked briefly with Scanlon at United and strongly recommended him to the club’s hierarchy. Chris Perkins, now involved at Arsenal and formerly head of academy recruitment at Derby County, also delivered glowing reports from Scanlon’s time coming through the age groups there before his switch to Old Trafford.
The winger becomes the latest to make the journey from Manchester to north London. He follows defender Habeeb Ogunneye, who has also joined Arsenal from United on a free transfer, again with a significant sell-on clause attached.
These are not isolated moves. Arsenal have sharpened their focus on strengthening their Under-21 squad, determined to raise the standard of the group and create a more direct pathway to Arteta’s senior side.
That intent was underlined earlier this week when 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he would be leaving Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally wrapped up a deal for him.
Scanlon now steps into that same pipeline. The question is not whether Arsenal are building something at Under-21 level — it is how quickly this new wave can crash into the first team.
