Arsenal Target Julian Alvarez in Bold Swap Deal for Gyokeres
Arsenal are ready to go all-in for Julian Alvarez – and Viktor Gyokeres could be the price they pay.
With the summer window ticking towards its close, Mikel Arteta is still chasing a new No.9 to sit at the heart of his Premier League title defence and Champions League push. Alvarez remains the name at the top of his list, even as links to Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen refuse to fade in the background.
Arsenal push Gyokeres on the table
Gyokeres arrived from Sporting last summer in a £55 million deal and hit 21 goals in all competitions. On paper, that is a strong return. Inside Arsenal, the feeling is different. They believe they need something even sharper, a forward who can tilt the very biggest nights their way.
That belief has led to a bold move. According to Spanish outlet Diario Sport, Arsenal have proposed a swap deal to Atletico Madrid: cash plus Gyokeres in exchange for Alvarez. The reported offer is £68.5 million plus the Sweden international, a package designed to test Atletico’s resolve and accelerate negotiations.
For Gyokeres, it would mean leaving the Emirates after just one season. For Arsenal, it would mean gambling on a striker they see as the final upgrade in a squad already stacked with elite defenders and midfielders.
Atletico, Barcelona and a tug-of-war
Alvarez has made no secret of his preferred next step. Barcelona is understood to be his favoured destination. The problem? Atletico do not want to strengthen a direct LaLiga rival and Barca’s financial issues make a £100m-plus move extremely complicated.
That stand-off has opened a lane for Arsenal. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has already revealed that talks over a potential deal have taken place in London, and the latest reports suggest the discussions have moved up a gear.
Diario Sport claim Alvarez’s “head has turned towards Emirates Stadium”, a direct consequence of Atletico’s reluctance to sell to Barcelona, even if the Catalan club somehow piece together the money. Financially, a switch to north London would not be an issue: Alvarez is expected to double his wages if an agreement is reached between the clubs.
For Atletico, the offer is tempting on several levels. They would bank a significant fee and receive a proven goalscorer in Gyokeres, all without reinforcing Barcelona. For Arsenal, it is the kind of aggressive, champion’s move that signals they are not satisfied with just one Premier League crown.
The missing piece in Arteta’s puzzle?
Arsenal’s 3-0 dismantling of Coventry in their Premier League opener underlined the strength of Arteta’s current squad. Yet even on a night when the champions cruised, the conversation quickly turned to what Alvarez could add.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville did not hide his admiration for the potential deal.
“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players,” he said.
“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.”
Neville still posed a question that will linger until Alvarez proves it on the biggest stage.
“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you. Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”
Arteta and Arsenal clearly believe the answer is yes. You do not put a £55m striker on the table and stack another £68.5m on top unless you are convinced.
Arsenal return to Premier League action on August 31 away at Aston Villa, where Ezri Konsa is set to face his former club. By then, the window will be almost shut.
