Arsenal Set to Exploit Villa's Early-Season Struggles
Aston Villa stagger into Monday night looking bruised, short-handed and already under pressure. Arsenal arrive as reigning champions, largely intact, quietly ruthless – and heavily fancied to walk out of Villa Park with three points and a clean sheet.
The numbers tell the story behind the odds. Arsenal to win with both teams not scoring is trading at 2.38, Kai Havertz to score anytime at 2.46, and Christos Tzolis to register at least one assist at 3.00. All three angles lean into the same narrative: a Villa side in disarray against a drilled, defensively tight champion with clear attacking focal points.
Villa stripped of stars and confidence
It has been a brutal summer for Unai Emery.
Key players have gone. Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers are out the door, Ezri Konsa has crossed the divide to join Arsenal, and Ollie Watkins looks bound for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Around that, a string of injuries has left the squad looking thin and unbalanced.
The impact was laid bare on the opening weekend. Villa were thrashed 4-0 away at Brighton, a result that stretched their losing run to four competitive matches. It echoes last season’s stumbling start, when they failed to win any of their first five Premier League games. The warning signs are flashing again.
Villa Park will be noisy. It usually is, and the ground has been a genuine weapon: the hosts have won two of the last three league meetings with Arsenal there, including last season’s clash. But this is not the same Villa, and this is very much the same Arsenal.
Champions arrive settled and mean
Mikel Arteta has kept his core together since lifting the Premier League trophy in May. The champions look settled, familiar – and now reinforced.
Ezri Konsa has been added to a defence already built on discipline and aggression. Arsenal’s back line has been the foundation of Arteta’s success, and there is little to suggest that will change. They come into this game on the back of two straight competitive wins, including a controlled 3-0 victory over Coventry City in their league opener.
That performance underlined a theme. Arsenal suffocated Coventry, offered little encouragement, and struck with precision. If they bring the same defensive intensity to Villa Park, the hosts could find chances scarce.
Recent history backs that up. Only one team scored in three of the last five league meetings at Villa Park. Villa, meanwhile, failed to find the net in any of their first four matches last season. Put that next to Arsenal’s miserly defensive profile and the angle becomes clear.
Betting angle 1: Arsenal to win and both teams not to score at 2.38
A 1-0 away victory fits the pattern: Arsenal to control, Villa to huff and puff without much end product. That’s the scoreline being forecast, with Havertz tipped as the decisive scorer.
Havertz at the heart of Arsenal’s attack
Kai Havertz has forced his way to the centre of Arteta’s plans again.
Against Coventry, the German started ahead of Viktor Gyökeres and was trusted with the full 90 minutes. He justified that faith quickly, opening the scoring in the 15th minute and leading the line with the kind of movement that defenders hate – drifting into awkward spaces, pulling markers around, constantly asking questions.
He comes into this fixture in sharp form. Havertz has scored in each of his last two club appearances and has six goals in his last 10 outings for club and country. After an injury-hit campaign, he finally has a platform to build rhythm and confidence as Arsenal’s central figure up front.
His height and physical presence add another layer of threat, especially against a Villa defence that has lost Konsa and looks short on cohesion. Crosses, cut-backs, late runs into the box – Havertz offers a bit of everything.
Betting angle 2: Kai Havertz to score anytime at 2.46
If Arsenal edge this by a single goal, the German is the obvious candidate to deliver it.
Tzolis brings a new edge on the left
On the opposite flank, Christos Tzolis is rapidly turning curiosity into conviction.
Players stepping up from the Belgian Pro League often need time to adjust to the Premier League’s tempo. Tzolis has skipped that settling-in period. Signed from Club Brugge in the summer, the Greek winger has looked at home from the first whistle.
He scored in his first outing in an Arsenal shirt against Girona. Then came the Community Shield, where he supplied two assists against Manchester City. He would likely have had another in the league opener if the Coventry goalkeeper hadn’t got a touch before Bukayo Saka finished, wiping the assist from the stats.
Even without that, his numbers against Coventry were eye-catching: most shots in the match (4), most touches in the opposition box (8), most accurate passes into the box (4), plus three key passes. Arsenal’s left wing, often a quieter zone in previous seasons, suddenly looks like a live wire.
With Villa’s back line reshuffled and low on confidence, Tzolis’ direct running and flair could be a serious problem. One clean pass, one cut-back, one whipped cross – that’s all it takes.
Betting angle 3: Christos Tzolis to record 1+ assist at 3.00
If Arsenal do carve Villa open, the new man on the left feels well-placed to be involved.
Probable line-ups
Aston Villa (expected): Bizot; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Bogarde, McGinn; Barkley, Garnacho, Buendia.
Arsenal (expected): Raya; White, Mosquera, Magalhaes, Calafiori; Rice, Odegaard, Lewis-Skelly; Saka, Tzolis, Havertz.
The stage is set: a wounded Villa, a ruthless champion, a restless home crowd. Arsenal can send a message on Monday night. The only real question is how loudly they choose to deliver it.
