AS Monaco Faces Challenges in Ligue 1 Opener Against Le Havre

AS Monaco’s Ligue 1 campaign starts on the road and under strain, with new manager Filipe Luís already juggling fatigue, absences and expectations as his side head to Le Havre AC.

The trip will be just Luís’s second competitive game in charge of the Principality club. His tenure opened on Thursday night with a wild 3-2 win over Górnik Zabrze in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff – a result that brought goals and promise, but also left legs heavy before the domestic curtain-raiser.

A patched‑up Monaco

Luís travels without a sizeable chunk of his squad. Christian Mawissa is suspended, while Jordan Teze, Ansu Fati and new arrival Mattias Abline are all sidelined through injury. On top of that, two of Monaco’s headline attacking names, Takumi Minamino and Folarin Balogun, have been left out of the matchday squad to be rested after European duty.

It forces an early test of the squad’s depth and of Luís’s ability to improvise. Rotation isn’t a choice; it’s a necessity.

New faces, new spine

Manchester City loanee Mathys Detourbet is expected to keep his place and make a second straight start for Monaco after featuring in midfield in the Conference League. Alongside him, summer signing Sadibou Sané, brought in from Metz, should again anchor the defence after his own debut on Thursday.

On the left, Flávio Nazinho is in line for his first competitive start in Monaco colours following his move from Cercle Brugge. It’s a significant stage for the young full-back: an away opener, a new coach, and a back line already under the microscope.

Behind them, Lukas Hradecky is set to continue in goal, offering experience to a reshaped defence that also includes Eric Dier and Vanderson.

Probable XI at Le Havre

Luís is expected to send out a side that looks something like this:

Lukas Hradecky; Flávio Nazinho, Eric Dier, Sadibou Sané, Vanderson; Mathys Detourbet, Lamine Camara, Denis Zakaria, Mamadou Coulibaly; Mika Biereth, Aleksandr Golovin.

It’s a line-up that leans on energy in midfield and creativity from Golovin, with Mika Biereth asked to carry much of the attacking load in the absence of Minamino and Balogun.

European qualifiers on Thursday, a Ligue 1 opener on Sunday, a new manager already forced into bold calls. For Monaco, the season doesn’t ease them in; it throws them straight into the deep end.
