Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Recovery Boosts Chicago Fire Playoff Hopes
Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s season is no longer written off.
The Chicago Fire defender, who tore his thigh in late July and was initially expected to miss the rest of the year, is now on course for a possible return in time for the MLS Cup Playoffs in late November.
Speaking after the Fire’s 1-1 draw at the New York Red Bulls, coach Gregg Berhalter rowed back on his earlier assessment of the injury.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter admitted. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
For Chicago, that glimmer of hope is significant.
Before the setback, Mbokazi had been a rock in the Fire back line, drawing widespread praise and earning selection to the MLS All Star game. His form carried over from an eye-catching World Cup with Bafana, where he helped them reach the knockout rounds for the first time and emerged as one of the tournament’s standout young defenders.
The tear halted that surge in brutal fashion, stripping the Fire of a key organiser at the heart of their defence and denying Mbokazi the chance to build on his breakthrough year.
His accelerated recovery, though, creates a new tension.
Bafana face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15, fixtures that fall just days before Mbokazi could realistically be ready to rejoin Chicago’s matchday squad. An earlier-than-expected return would boost the Fire’s playoff push, but it comes too late to rescue his availability for those international dates.
For club and country, the calendar will not bend. Chicago may yet get their defensive pillar back when the stakes are highest. Bafana, this time, will have to cope without one of their brightest rising stars.
